/. ‘ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Vince Beltrami, 258-6284 New Poll Shows Governor Dunleavy is Unpopular Alaskans are Overwhelmingly Opposed to his Budget Proposal ANCHORAGE, April 22, 2019 - The Alaska AFL-CIO represents over 50,000 workers. The drastic cuts proposed by the Dunleavy administration threaten Alaska workers, their families, and the Alaska we love and respect. To better understand how Alaskans across the state were receiving the Governor’s actions and budget proposal, the Alaska AFL-CIO contracted with nationally recognized polling firm Lake Research Partners. The survey was in the field between March 30 - April 3 and reached 500 Alaskan voters likely to vote in the 2020 General Election. The results are clear. Governor Dunleavy is not popular in Alaska. 50% of Alaskans surveyed have an unfavorable opinion of the governor and only 40% hold a favorable opinion of him (9% were without opinion or unsure who the Governor is). Similarly, the Governor’s proposed budget is also very unpopular. Alaskans oppose Governor Dunleavy’s budget by a 2:1 margin with 63% of Alaskans opposed and only 29% of Alaskans in support (7% didn’t know or were undecided). “The Alaska AFL-CIO remains firm in its position opposing this budget and is not alone in our opposition,” Vince Beltrami, President, Alaska AFL-CIO said. “This budget isn’t just bad for workers and their families, it’s bad for all Alaskans.” The data shows that Alaskans support a balanced budget that pulls a number of different levers to avoid drastic cuts. This includes using a variety of broad-based revenue sources including from oil and gas exploration and allowing a small portion of the PFD earnings to be used to avoid drastic budget cuts that cripple our economy. “The message is clear; Governor Dunleavy is not popular, and his budget is not wanted. Alaskans want a budget that doesn’t destroy the state we love,” Beltrami stated. “They want a balanced approach even if that means using new revenue.” An infographic highlighting these key results is attached. ###
