Sun Devil Family, We, the 2018-2019 ASASU Council of Presidents, were elected to serve the student population and advocate for the resources, services, and initiatives that facilitate the best possible experience at ASU. For some, Barrett, The Honors College, is an important part of this experience. The college’s recent fee increase proposal for the 2019-2020 school year has catalyzed a university-wide discussion allowing students to redefine the honors experience. The feedback we have received about the present Barrett experience, combined with the understanding that Barrett will eventually require additional revenue to support the growth of the college, leads us to believe that the fee must be increased in the next academic year in order to best support the needs of both current and prospective students. However, based on the concerns raised during the feedback collecting process, we acknowledge that there are fundamental changes that must be made. The Council of Presidents will offer support for the fee increase, contingent on crucial changes to the Barrett experience based on the student concerns we intercepted. These include, but are not limited to: greater marketing efforts of need-based Community Grants to both current and prospective students, a restructuring of the thesis funding model to decrease student financial burden, increased efforts to hire Barrett teaching faculty of color, a restructuring of the student feedback process, and equity among campus resources, among others. We believe that the fee increase will give Barrett, The Honors College the financial means to make the necessary changes to the current honors experience, as well as expand for future enrollment. If you feel that changes in the fee may impact your financial ability to remain in Barrett, please contact a Barrett representative on your campus to obtain more information about your options. The Council of Presidents looks forward to continuing dialogue with students and the ASU administration to provide the best possible experience for students. We welcome any feedback and questions you may have. Go Devils! Sincerely, Your 2018-2019 ASASU Council of Presidents Aly Perkins, USG-Downtown Daniel Pasco, USG-Polytechnic Nikki Tran, USG-Tempe Alexander Sojourney, USG-West Michelle Govani, GPSA
