Jones, CEO New Life Center, Manassas, Virginia Getting Help to Potentially Violent Youth in Public Schools The horrific shootings in Newtown, CT have elevated public concern about undiagnosed mental illness in individuals who seemingly suddenly erupt into violence. But how does the average parent, teacher or friend identify and get help to a troubled youth before it is too late? Members of Youth For Tomorrow’s counseling staff came together recently to share some insights based on YFT’s decades of experience working with and helping alienated youth. “When you look at kids enrolling in school, there is no sure process to find out, but we see a common thread in these events,” says YFT’s Director of Clinical Services Dr. Terry R. Tinsley. “There is a detachment, a darkness that surrounds them. There are issues of connectedness. Some kids are not interacting. That is a warning sign that we should investigate further.” “We have to pay attention to that child who is withdrawn. His or her issues can escalate.” Ironically, he notes, with all the other problems teachers have maintaining order in classrooms, if students are not acting out, the teachers may think that they are the “good kids.” With the heavy load of SOL testing and other requirements and the lack of counseling staff in schools, many troubled young people travel beneath the radar. How Violence Can Germinate: What can happen, members of the counseling staff say, is that as the child has no appropriate bonding, he or she feels anger and has thoughts like “I want to hurt you. I want to kill you.” YFT’s Raheem Turain directs YFT’s external programs, which include mental These feelings can take on a health services in Prince William Public Schools. life of their own. It was 25 years ago when Joe Gibbs said, “Why don’t you come on board and help us find a way to meet all the financial challenges facing our youth home.” It wasn’t really posed as a question but as only Joe can say it, “Why don’t we give you an opportunity and see where God leads us!” “Sure!” was the response and life has never been the same — for Youth For Tomorrow and fulfilling its mission, the handful of donors we had at the time, the Board of Trustees which numbered less than the size of our present Executive Committee, and a guy who had just departed from managing the Ronald Reagan Presidential Foundation and was looking for “work.” Dr. Gary L. Jones Eventually, the role of the Board fundraiser was expanded to include the responsibilities of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), in February, 1996. On several occasions the omnipotent power of the Lord has been apparent as we have walked our marvelous journey but particularly today after a phone conversation with YFT’s Chaplain, Denny Glusko. He talked about the poignant imagery of Good Friday and the subsequent Resurrection of Christ that makes us think about the role the He has played in all that has transpired on our campus: meeting financial obligations when it seemed bankruptcy was near on three separate occasions; retirement (twice) of the revered Joe Gibbs as Head Coach of the Redskins; successful completion of a $13M Capital Campaign in only two years at the same time we met the operating budget obligations — each achieved through private sector donations; expanding our campus by 30% in 2001, through a private donation permitting YFT to launch a girls’ program in 2003 including building five girls’ homes in four years; establishing a Mommy & Me program in 2007; establishing a Girls On A Journey Program in 2009; launching five “off-campus” mental health programs in 2010-2011; launching a program for Unaccompanied Immigrant Children from Central America in 2012; and balancing our budget in 15 of the last 16 years. All because the Lord remained faithful to our mission and those who have served Him and the children He has directed to our care. A grateful “thank you” to all of you who have served these children through supporting Youth For Tomorrow. Gary L. Jones, Ph.D. “Whatsoever you do for the least of mine, you do for me.” Matthew 25:40 New Life News page 3 Looking Back: Alum Talks about YFT Impact What Nick Parecco remembers most about Youth For Tomorrow, more than 25 years later, is “an overwhelming feeling of being loved.” Nick was in his eighth grade classroom when he was arrested for drugs. “I was a crazy, out-of-control kid,” he says. “I was always in trouble and I felt like no one loved me.” He was given a choice between going to juvenile detention or the brand new youth home just built by Redskins Coach Joe Gibbs and some supporters. Taking a chance on the unknown, Nick became one of the first three or four YFT residents at the end of 1986. “The houseparents, the director, the counselors, were so nice to me,” he says. “Joe Gibbs, who was coaching and had a lot on his plate, still came and led Bible study. It was so personal. He remembered our names. We could talk to him.” “My experience was being respected and loved. It had so much impact in my life. We sat at one dinner table, talking together. It felt like a family. That’s what I had missed at my house. I had felt lost. When I got to YFT, they welcomed me with open arms.” “I felt loved, on a personal level. If you complained or cried, they always made you feel better. There were rules, but they handled them well. You didn’t want to break the rules because you didn’t want to let them down.” “One thing I loved was that they didn’t push Christianity—they lived the life. They [the staff members] were happy, outgoing. You wanted to be like them. It made me want to get closer to God. In the Bible studies we were able to participate and encouraged to ask questions. I was on fire for God when I left.” Remembering Mr. Hazel: Another vivid memory for Parreco was visiting William A. Hazel’s company. Hazel, a founding supporter YFT Alum Nick Parreco. and constant YFT contributor, was a giant in the same kind of heavy equipment construction business as was Parreco’s grandfather. Nick remembers how impressed he was by the size and efficiency of the Hazel operation, the repair shop, all the equipment, and how the trucks were always washed. “He said he knew my grandfather, and that he was a good man. Mr. Hazel was my idol, I wanted to have a company like he did.” Nick finished the YFT program in 1987 after 11 months. He went to work for his grandfather, working as a laborer, an equipment operator, a foreman, and finally, a superintendent. Ten years ago, he, his brother, and a cousin took over the company, and at one time had 70 employees. In December of 2012, after economic downturns, the brothers sold the company to the counsin. Coming Back to Give Back: Nick used some of the proceeds to give a generous donation to YFT. “I looked at the website and got to thinking about what a blessing YFT had been for me at that time. I think about what if I had gone to juvenile lockup and gotten in with worse kids. Who knows where I would be now.” Recently he visited the YFT campus and was amazed at all the growth, including having a program for girls. Parreco’s life has not been without tragedy since he left YFT. His brother Jonny had followed Nick into YFT and graduated from the program in 1989. Jon married, had a family, coached kids, and started a successful remodeling business. But things got tough. “He just got overwhelmed,” Nick says. “He took painkillers and then got hooked on heroin and could not get off it.” Finally, Jonny committed suicide. “It totally opened up my eyes to how powerfully drugs can take you down,” Nick says. The Future: Now the YFT alum is working on opening up a coffee shop on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. He was attracted to the idea because when he traveled he would always visit coffee shops. “I love hearing people talking ideas, having business meetings, and having conversations.” Sitting around the table together, talking. Both Nick and his brother Jon, shown together here in a 1984 photo, completed the YFT program in the late 1980s New Life News page 4 Erik Estrada Warns YFT Residents about Internet Predators “4-Y-O. Put that in the computer. 4-Y-O.” That was the instruction given by the sheriff to one of the deputy marshals sitting in front of computer terminals. What the marshals were doing was surfing the internet to find sexual predators that were preying on children. Actor Erik Estrada was there visiting the site. “What I then saw on the computer totally shocked me,” he says. “There were 457 website IP addresses—all of them internet websites with pornographic photos involving four-yearold children.” “I left the room enraged and walked around outside for a while. Then I came back and said, ‘I want to do something about this.’” Erick Estrada came to stardom in the 1970 movie The Cross and the Switchblade. He then starred in the police drama CHiPs in the late 1970s and early 1980s and in many TV and movie roles since. He is now the National Spokesman for Safe Surfin’ Foundation and star of a new movie Finding Faith, which tells true stories from law enforcement officers with the Internet Crimes Against Children task Force. He came to YFT to talk to the residents about internet safety. “There is so much information that you might give up to a new ‘friend’ online. He learns who your friends are. What you like. Where you live. Where you go to school. Most kids are taken in because the guy pretends to have all kinds of things in common with you. He starts getting friendly. He sends gifts. Then he says he is going to be in the neighborhood, and how about coming out and saying hello. Then he grabs you.“ This can be followed by days of rape, he says. The rape may be videotaped and used to blackmail the child into becoming a sex slave and not running away. He warned the YFT residents not to give away information on social media, and to talk to an adult if they think someone is getting too personal. Estrada told them about his own background growing up in Spanish Harlem with a heroin addict father. On the streets at the age of five, Eric shined shoes and sold snow cones and did all he could to survive. “I think about if I had had an adult to go to, maybe I wouldn’t have to learn everything from the school of hard knocks.” A successful acting career and police work CHiPs Star Talks to YFT CEO Dr. Gary Jones (he has been a full-time deputy sheriff) took him from that life, but many that he knew were not so fortunate. Today he has a daughter and worries about her safety. “I want kids to be educated about the internet. It’s a great tool but there are bad guys in there.” “You are so lucky,” he told the YFT residents. “You have new parents. The ones you’re born with doesn’t mean that they can be parents. You guys are so lucky for what you have here. Drain them for all their knowledge so when you hit the road, you’ve got invisible tools that most kids who have parents don’t even have.” The Finding Faith movie was released in February and is being shown across the country in churches and other venues. Help, from p1 tion takes its toll. Unintentionally, the school may be breeding a child that may potentially hurt himself or others, the counselors say. Addressing the Issues: Supported by a grant from Potomac Health Foundation, Youth For Tomorrow counselors are now providing Therapeutic Day Services in three elementary, two middle, and one high school in Prince William County. The program combines intensive treatment to students utilizing psychotherapeutic interventions with educational assistance and mental health treatment. This may include behavior management, extensive face-to-face support, diagnostic assessment, weekly family counseling, weekly therapy sessions, anger management, therapeutic activities, and daily group therapeutic sessions, as well as medication management education. Children’s problems can have many causes—lack of structure, abuse, lack of parental consistency, single parent home, substance abuse in the family—YFT staff members say. But alienation can happen in two-parent homes as well if the child is ignored or abused. Counselors also look for possible mental health history, such as depression, on the mother’s side. Identifying Potential Problems: The counselors ask the children questions. They look at how a child dresses. “Dark makeup, dark clothing, trench coats, what we choose to look like all often reflects how we feel inside,” Tinsley says. The YFT school services means that children have someone who can advocate for them and understand their needs. Instead of waiting three months for help, their issues can be addressed immediately. When the intervention is done in the school, the child is not ostracized by being kept out for several months, leading to further alienation. If they need further diagnosis, youths are referred to the YFT Diagnostic and Assessment Center in Woodbridge. If needed, they can receive Outpatient Mental Health Services at the same location, including medication management. YFT’s Intensive In-Home Services can work with the family. All are part of YFT’s External Services Programs, which are staffed by a total of 16 therapists including a psychologist and a psychiatrist. More than 250 young people have been served since the programs were launched at the beginning of 2012. The programs are supported by Potomac Health Foundation. Referrals to YFT’s External Programs can come from any source, including parents, teachers, law enforcement and concerned citizens. Many contacts are made through the YFT website by parents or friends who are looking for help and don’t know where to turn. The counseling staff relates how one woman called and desperately cried for help. She said she didn’t know where to turn, and found the YFT website on the internet. She said that she knew something was wrong with her child but no one would help her. YFT reached out to give her help. Attitude, Character and Enthusiasm New Life News page 6 Gangs: What’s Going On? Youth gangs continue to grow in the Greater Washington, DC area and especially in Northern Virginia. Youth For Tomorrow and North Spring Behavioral Healthcare convened some 100 teachers, social workers, law enforcement and other youth workers in February to discuss facts, issues, concerns, and trends, and what those working in the field should be aware of. Some important facts brought out in the session: The average entry age for a gang member currently is 14, and the trend is toward younger and younger children. Kids join gangs for identification, love, a surrogate family, power, security, a means of earning money, an alternative to school, an opportunity to build self-esteem, a rite of passage to adulthood, activity—to keep from being bored, to have a place to vent their anger, and for protection. In the local area, nine out of 10 youths who join gangs have learning disabilities. If this had been identified and addressed, they might not have turned to a gang. 80% of those in a local program have a trauma history as victims or have witnessed violence. If not treated after experiences like these, they become more vulnerable. Immigrant youths are being targeted in the local area. Doing poorly in school because of language difficulties is an important risk factor. Gangs are turning to sex trafficking as a means of making money. This is easier than selling drugs. The role of girls in gangs is increasingly to be used. They become powerless, a replaceable commodity. “Skip parties” are a big thing in Fairfax, many in middle schools. Students show up to get on attendance rolls and then leave for a day of drinking and partying, often hosted by gang members. Many girls recruit other girls for trafficking. Girls are invited to a party where they may be drugged, assaulted, and videotaped to blackmail them into further participation. The conference discussed the warning signs and preventive measures that can be taken by parents, teachers, and youth workers. Our mission is to provide them the opportunity and motivation to focus their lives and develop the confidence, skills, intellectual ability, spiritual insight and moral integrity to become responsible and productive members of society. Troubled by what he learned while working with at-risk adolescents in the Washington, DC area on his first tour as Washington Redskins Head Coach, Joe Gibbs envisioned a program to help these young boys and girls. His vision was for a program that would combine character rehabilitation, quality education, and personal faith and life skills in a “New Life Center”. With the help from local business leaders and friends, Youth For Tomorrow opened its doors in 1986. “I believe there is nothing more important in life than what we leave behind in terms of how we have helped others. Years from now no one will remember who had a great season or who won the Super Bowl. That’s why Youth For Tomorrow is so important. For each young man and woman that we are able to help, we start a chain of good results because he or she will influence his or her own spouse and children and others around them. And they will pass along what they have learned to others. What will last in this world is what kind of influence we have had on others.” –Coach Joe Gibbs FOR MORE INFORMATION, please call Love Jones at 703-396-8415 BANQUET SPONSOR - $ 100,000 Two (2) VIP tables (20 seats) at the banquet *Six (6) tickets to Private Reception Member of the Banquet Host Committee Table guests receive tickets to The Founder’s Reception Banquet Sponsor recognition in all media and print Full-page ad in printed program Private Round Trip Transportation (2 seats) and Tour of Joe Gibbs Racing BANQUET CO-SPONSOR - $ 50,000 Two (2) reserved tables (20 seats) at the banquet *Four (4) tickets to Private Reception Member of the Banquet Host Committee Table guests receive tickets to The Founder’s Reception Banquet Co-Sponsor recognition in all printed materials Full-page ad in printed program Private Round Trip Transportation (2 seats) and Tour of Joe Gibbs Racing HALL OF FAME - $ 25,000 One (1) reserved table (10 seats) at the banquet *Two (2) tickets to Private Reception Member of the Banquet Host Committee Table guests receive tickets to The Founder’s Reception Hall of Fame recognition in printed program Half-page ad in printed program Private Round Trip Transportation (1 seat) and Tour of Joe Gibbs Racing COACH’S CORNER - $ 10,000 One (1) reserved table (10 seats) at the banquet Recognition in printed program Quarter-page ad in printed program FANS’ CLUB - $ 1,500 Reserved seat for banquet (1 ticket) Joe Gibbs As Head Coach of the Washington Redskins NFL football team, Joe Gibbs led the team to three Super Bowl Championships in four tries. Jones, CEO New Life Center, Manassas, Virginia Congratulations to Our Graduates! YFT Graduation and Awards Ceremony Graduation is certainly a special milestone. It is an especially significant accomplishment for the children at Youth For Tomorrow. Children come to YFT struggling with behavioral issues, failing in school and having given up in their classwork. Through a personalized approach and small class sizes at YFT, these children learn to overcome their struggles and the majority of children complete their coursework successfully. On June 12th, families and friends of YFT graduates, along with members of the Board of Trustees, excitedly filled the auditorium for this year’s commencement ceremony. Students actively participated in the ceremony. Brandon, a high school graduate welcomed the guests and led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. Dezmond provided the invocation. What an accomplishment for these students to confidently address a crowd of more than 200 guests! continued on page 3 Inside: CEO Message p. 2 YFT Helps Families p. 4-5 YFT Staff Provide Support p. 5 Cases For Kids Project p. 6 Dr. Jones Receives Award p. 7 AdvancED Accreditation p.7 Burgandy & Gold p. 8-11 YFT Golf Tournament p. 12-13 Country Fair p. 14-15 New Life News page 2 A Message from the CEO As we walk through our journey of life, our daily walk is met with challenges, opportunities and distractions. There are times when we may lose sight of the Lord’s direction for our lives. There are all too frequent occasions when we become vulnerable to our own weaknesses and succumb to words and actions that are unbecoming if not actually the antithesis of a Christian walk. We must manifest within ourselves a standard of conduct that exemplifies the Lord’s grace and wisdom in all our relationships – personal and professional. Recently, I came across a prayer, author unknown, which lucidly spells out the elements of a Christian character we model to our children. I shared the prayer as a message to our graduates and staff at our recent 28th Graduation and Awards Ceremony. I offer it to you, donors and volunteers of Youth For Tomorrow. Perhaps it will edify your thoughts and guidance with your walk with the Lord as it has mine. Directions to Our Father’s House Make a Right onto Believeth Blvd. Keep straight and go through the Green Light, which is Jesus Christ. There, you must turn onto the Bridge of Faith, Which is over troubled water. When you get off the bridge, make a Right turn and Keep Straight. You are on the King’s Highway – Heavenbound. Keep going for three miles: One for the Father, One for the Son, and One for the Holy Ghost. Then exit off onto Grace Boulevard. From there, make a Right turn on Gospel Lane. Keep Straight and then make another Right on Prayer Road. As you go on your way, Yield Not to the traffic on Temptation Ave. Also, avoid SIN STREET, because it is a DEAD END. Pass up Envy Drive and Hate Avenue. Also, pass Hypocrisy Street, Gossiping Lane, and Backbiting Blvd. However, you have to go down Long-suffering Lane, Persecution Boulevard and Trials and Tribulations Ave. But that’s all right, because VICTORY Street is straight ahead! Amen Whatsover you do for the least of mine, brothers & sisters, you do for me. (Matthew 25:40) New Life News page 3 continued from page 1 University in the fall, majoring in Philosophy & Law. She aspires to become an attorney. Gabriela shared, “YFT was a blessing in disguise; I did not realize how important this foundation of constant love, encouragement and support would be in helping me face difficult situations in the world. This is not the end, but rather, the beginning.” What remarkable young ladies! We are so proud of what they have accomplished and wish them God’s richest blessings on their journey ahead. Two girls powerfully and bravely shared their testimonies. Gabi, who was named Valedictorian for her graduating class, shared how she had been abused by family members and made her rounds through foster care since she was 11 years old. Gabi describes, “People who don’t want help won’t change. I didn’t want anyone’s help – I didn’t want anyone’s advice or love – I wanted nothing but what I thought I needed, which was freedom.” Gabi continued to rebel and was placed in home after home. Until she reached Youth For Tomorrow. “Becoming a resident at YFT has been life changing. I could not be more thankful. I love the program and Joe Gibbs, for being such a creative man to build this place. Gabi continues, “I came to YFT thinking I didn’t need help. I wasn’t here for the same reason as other residents, but then I realized we all need the same thing. We need shelter, people to protect and guide us – and we need love. That’s what YFT has provided for me.” “I have been accepted to Valley Forge Christian College and have been awarded a $40,000, 4 year scholarship from YFT! I have also received an Academic and Athletic scholarship from Valley Forge and I am playing volleyball for their school. Here I was, worried that coming to Youth for Tomorrow would not help me accomplish the goals I worked hard to establish. But only in Gods time, YFT truly blessed me and my future. I have to say thanks again to everyone who supported the students at Youth for Tomorrow and we are all blessed to have you in our lives.” A former YFT resident (2004), Gabriela also shared her story at Graduation. She did not want to come to YFT and even ran away several times. She left YFT with the same mentality. Shortly after, she became pregnant and reality hit her. She knew she needed to change, not only for herself, but now for her unborn child. Gabriela successfully earned her GED and went on to college. She received an Associate’s Degree through Northern Virginia Community College. Gabriela has been awarded a scholarship through Youth For Tomorrow and will continue her education at George Mason Residents at Youth For Tomorrow demonstrate their progress and achievements in the YFT program by progressing through the YFT Phase System. When a resident feels that they have demonstrated adequate preparation to move onto the next Phase, an application is made to the Evaluation Team. As residents achieve higher Phases, additional privileges and responsibilities are earned. The YFT Phase System consists of: Phase Phase Phase Phase Phase 1 2 3 4 5 – – – – – Orientation Behavior Self-Awareness Responsibility and Relationships Leadership Finally, we recognized students who went above and beyond during their time at YFT: Spiritual Leadership Award – Given to a student who loves the Lord and regularly reads her Bible. She mirrors God’s love to everyone she meets. She loves going to church and is a true believer in our Lord, Jesus Christ. Citizenship Award – Given to a student who is always ready to help others. He plays fair, respects authority and treats others with respect. About-Face Award – Given to a young resident who struggled with many behavioral issues when he first arrived at YFT. He has turned his life around and now has a positive attitude. He’s smart, friendly and loves interacting with others. Peer Leadership Award – Given to a resident who demonstrates a positive attitude in all she does. She follows staff direction, demonstrates leadership with peers, and does what is asked of her in a calm demeanor. She also gently encourages her peers. Our graduates are attending colleges such as Northern Virginia Community College, Valley Forge Christian College, Germanna Community College and more. They aspire to become missionaries, lawyers, nurses, social workers or to work in law enforcement. Thank you for generously supporting Youth For Tomorrow. You are having a direct impact on these young lives. Because of you, these students were able to receive the help they needed to redirect their lives both academically and behaviorally. Thank you so much! New Life News page 4 Youth For Tomorrow Helps Families Find Solutions to Stay Together Sean and Keri are brother and sister who came to YFT late in 2013. The family circumstances were dire. They were homeless and their father was sick. Their story is common as people fall through the cracks in American society and one trouble builds on another until the situation becomes a crisis. Keri explains “We were homeless, all we really had was each other. My dad was really sick. He was in and out of the hospital a lot.” When Keri arrived at YFT, she was six months pregnant. She went into the “Mommy and Me” program where she could continue to go to school, receive the prenatal health care she needed and learn the parenting skills she would need to care for her baby. Winter was fast approaching and shelter was a concern for this 16 year old girl. Leaving her parents suddenly and coming to YFT was tough. Keri struggled at first. “It was really hard. All I wanted to do was cry and stay in my room. But then it popped in my head that I had to be strong and think about the baby now. It was hard, it hurt. I had never been away from my parents before. I didn’t really care where we were as long as I was with my mom and dad. “I wasn’t ready to be a mom. I was 16 and I had my whole life ahead of me. But then I started feeling my baby move. I feel like the Mommy and Me program has taught me a lot and the day that I gave birth to my son that’s when I was ready to be a mom and reality hit me – that he’s mine. He has made me want to focus on school, made me want to go somewhere in life.” In the meantime, Sean went to stay with his older sister. “This was supposed to help me, it was supposed to be like a new start, but really I was worse. I was hanging out with older people, doing things I shouldn’t have been doing, they let me do whatever I wanted. It was a worse situation than before. “ A couple months later, Sean came to YFT, too. He was struggling in school, angry and troubled. Sean has come a long way not only personally but academically. “School has changed at YFT. My grades have gone up and I have the highest grade point average I have ever had at YFT. Even though I kept getting into trouble before, I had okay grades. But now, I have great grades! The classes are smaller, it is easier to focus, and the teachers are there to help when me when I need it. It’s just that simple.” Keri says all she cared about was boys and paid no attention to her school work. Things are different after going to school at YFT. She says, “I came to YFT and my GPA went up. I have almost a 4.0. I have great grades. I came as a sophomore and am leaving as a senior. I wouldn’t be able to do it without YFT.” Keri and Sean are leaving YFT with new life skills, back on track with their education, some new possessions and knowing YFT is always here for them. Aside from the immediate things that YFT does for children, there are things that last a lifetime. So many kids return to YFT as adults and tell us that the love and care they received at YFT gave them a foundation of strength to draw on as they grew up. Even though some temporarily lose their way, they have known what it is to be loved and cared for and they have that wellspring to draw on when times get tough. Sean says he will leave YFT with many nice things including shoes, nicer clothes and his first watch. Keri nudges her brother to remind him of his new suit. Sean says he has never worn a suit before and Keri smiles and says, “He looks good in it too!” It’s a tender moment that provides insight into how little these kids have had in the way of basic possessions in their lives. After briefly touching on the material things, Sean says he will leave with many friends. Keri says she will leave with many strengths and parenting skills she has learned, and the important relationships she has made with staff and other students. She also says she will leave with things. Keri says “I will leave here with stuff, and also know if I need someone to talk to, I can call YFT anytime for help. The biggest thing I am leaving here with is my son.” The family is closer than they have ever been before. Keri says, “We loved each other but things went too far. We screamed and fought. But now when we get upset we give each other a chance to walk away and then we talk.” Sean says, “We used to fight like cats and dogs. But, it’s totally different now.” He smiles and says, “There are lots of hugs and kisses.” New Life News page 5 Keri agrees, “Now we are brother and sister like we used to be. We go outside together, sit on the porch and do things together.” The kids’ faces are filled with hope as they talk about the future. Keri tells, “When we went to court to be able to go back home, I just looked at my dad and I could see how happy he was. He looked at me and my baby, Patrick and I just knew that God was with us and things were going to keep going forward. We have come a long way and it’s brought our family really close.” Sean’s eyes are bright as he says, “Now me and my sister, my granddad, my dad, my mom and Patrick are all going to be one big happy family.” When you look into their beautiful faces and see their open, loving hearts, you can be sure that the work we are doing at YFT truly saves and changes lives. Youth For Tomorrow Staff Provides Community Support Following Teen Suicides in Fairfax Jack Chen, a sophomore at Woodson High School in Fairfax, had a 4.3 GPA, was captain of the junior varsity football team and had never tried drugs or alcohol, but on February 26, the 15-year old took his own life by stepping in front of an oncoming commuter train. Even in hindsight, Jack’s friends and family could cite no sign of the young man’s inner turmoil that had driven him to this tragic act. To those close to him, he seemed like a happy, well-adjusted teen.* Jack Chen is one of six apparent suicides at Woodson in the last three years, one of two in just 48 hours last February. Authorities do not believe any of the six are directly related, but sadly, such “clustering” of suicides is not uncommon. The previous month, two students at nearby Langley High School also committed suicide within 48 hours of each other. In the wake of these tragedies, the Fairfax County School leadership was anxious to offer support, and specifically intervention strategies, to members of the community. Youth For Tomorrow Therapist Natalia Becker, MA was selected by the County to lead two sessions for parents, students, educators, church leaders and others in the community who wanted to help. Ms. Becker’s program, titled “Silence No More: Signs and Symptoms of Suicidality with an Emphasis on Survivors of Suicides,” identified the risks and warning signs for suicide in everyday people. Tragically, suicide is the third leading cause of death for young adults ages 15 to 24, and the risk is greatest for those who have lost someone to suicide, a “survivor of suicide.” In the May 17 program, Ms. Becker dispelled many of the popular myths about suicide for the group. Most notably, she said that it was not just “crazy” people who commit suicide. All types of people are vulnerable to the pressures that lead to an attempted suicide. Another myth dispelled, if a person talks about suicide they are more, not less, likely to take that step. The meetings were cathartic for the community. “The professionals – the teachers and principals – in the audience asked good questions, but afterwards, the students and parents were lined up to express how much the program had touched them,” said Ms. Becker. “There were many tears and hugs. They were moved just to have a chance to talk about what they were going through as survivors.” “YFT was glad we were able to partner with NOVACO and Fairfax County to offer this program,” said Director of Clinical Services Terry Tinsley, Ph.D. “Reaching out to children and families in our community who are hurting and in need of support – whether in a time of crisis or in dealing with longer-term behavioral and emotional issues – is the focus of YFT’s Behavioral Health Service Program.” In the first half of 2014, YFT has served over 800 children and families from Northern Virginia through its Behavioral Health outreach. “It breaks your heart to hear the stories of the young people who took their own lives,” says Ms. Becker, “but the tragedy would be even greater if we didn’t step in to support the ‘survivors.’ I’m grateful that YFT is in the community to serve our community.” New Life News page 6 “Cases for Kids” Project When children arrive at Youth For Tomorrow, they often arrive owning only the clothes on their backs. Through your generosity, the children are given clothing, shoes and other possessions to call their own. When they successfully graduate, YFT residents take these possessions with them as they depart. However, their belongings are packed into trash bags. Derrick Riggins, Director of Community Government Relations at YFT, can relate to the children as he went through the foster system himself. Derrick can attest the children are most thankful for everything they receive at YFT, but is sensitive to the negative connotation of packing belongings into trash bags. Derrick has begun gathering suitcases for residents departing YFT. We have partnered with the American Academy of Adoption Attorneys and the Giving Circle at Heritage Hunt. We have already collected over 15 suitcases! If you have new or used (in good condition) suitcases, please consider donating them to YFT to distribute to residents as they depart. Having a suitcase to carry possessions may seem trivial to us, but it shows the children they matter – they are going home with a changed life and a sense of belonging. Love Jones Receives the “Making A Difference Award” from VAISEF At the Spring Conference of the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Education Facilities, YFT’s Director of Special Events, Ms. Love Jones, received the Annual “Making A Difference Award” for her outstanding performance serving the children of Youth For Tomorrow -- a VAISEF organization. In presenting the award, VAISEF President Ron Spears recognized Love’s eight years in creating and executing the major fundraising events at YFT and giving special acknowledgment to her seven years as a volunteer to YFT which preceded her appointment to the Development Office staff. Mr. Spears also remarked how Love’s commitment to the children of YFT includes organizing a Thanksgiving Celebration, spearheading a Community Service Month during the post-Thanksgiving through the Christmas Holiday Season, coordinating marketing efforts for the expansion of enrollment in the Behavioral Health Services programs and developing a celebration for the first annual Therapeutic Day Treatment Recognition Awards program to children in the TDT summer program. VAISEF is YFT’s State accrediting organization and represents over 70 residential treatment facilities and day schools throughout the Commonwealth. New Life News page 7 Dr. Jones Receives the Leadership Prince William Chairman’s Engagement Award Dr. Gary Jones of Youth For Tomorrow received the Chairman’s Engagement Award, which recognizes an individual or organization which has made a tremendous difference during the chairman’s year in office. Leadership Prince William Chairman Jason Hickman presented this year’s award to Dr. Jones. "Dr. Jones’ support for Leadership Prince William has been invaluable to our organization over the past year. He has supported Leadership Prince William in many ways, all of which have advanced our mission to create stronger leaders and a stronger community. In just one example, Dr. Jones and the Youth For Tomorrow team have made it possible for us to take our youth program from an ambitious idea to reality in just one year. The Chairman’s Engagement Award is one small way we can express our gratitude to Dr. Jones and Youth For Tomorrow. " Kathy Bentz, Executive Director for LPW added, “During the past year, Youth For Tomorrow has provided funds to help start a youth leadership initiative, sponsored the organization’s gala, hosted multiple Leadership Prince William programs at their facility in Bristow, agreed to be the host site for our two-week summer youth camp, serves on our Board of Regents and much more. Dr. Jones and his team did all of this while operating one of the most vital non-profit organizations in our region.” Youth For Tomorrow Awarded AdvancED Accreditation Youth For Tomorrow Secondary School was recently awarded accreditation for the AdvancED Accreditation Commission. Accreditation is a voluntary method of quality assurance developed more than 100 years ago by American universities and secondary schools, and designed primarily to distinguish school adhering to a set of educational standards. AdvancED was created through a 2006 merger of the PreK-12 divisions of the North Central Association (NCA) and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS)—and expanded through the 2011 acquisition of the Northwest Accreditation Commission (NWAC). Our accreditation is for a five-year term with regular monitoring of progress and reporting occurring during the term. This is a rigorous process that examines the entire organization to determine how well everyone works together to meet the needs of the students. The process involves three ongoing components: 1. Meeting high quality standards; 2. Implementing a continuous process of improvement; and 3. Engaging in quality assurance through and internal and external review. School Improvement, Technology, Data, and Professional Learning Community committees were formed to conduct an Internal Review. Committee members consisted of leadership, teachers, administration, and stakeholders. During the Internal Review process, strengths and areas of improvements were cited. One area of improvement included the use of technology. As a result, tablets were purchased for each student and teachers received laptops and Promethean Boards for each classroom. An External Review Team, consisting of professional peers, provided an analysis and evaluation of our program as well as valuable feedback and direction for improvement. The site visit included touring the school, looking at standardized test data, reviewing the website and interviewing various members of the school community. One team member stated, “School leaders, teachers, and support staff are deeply committed to supporting the academic, emotional, and spiritual growth of all students. With this Accreditation, Youth For Tomorrow is nationally recognized as a school of high quality. We congratulate our dedicated professional staff for their commitment to excellence in our school! TOYOTA 9 DODG- Vol. 30, No. 3, Fall 2016 New Life Center, Manassas, Virginia Joe Gibbs, Chairman Dr. Gary L. Jones, CEO Susan LaPierre, President Board of Trustees Groundbreaking for the Chapel the Morning of the Country Fair This Chapel will serve the children who reside on our campus - just during the past year that includes over 750 boys and girls - and the several hundred more we serve offcampus as well. One of the great "builders" of all time was the Biblical Prophet, Nehemiah, who re-built the walls around Jerusalem. It is in his name that will honor all donors to the Chapel whose names will appear on the Nehemiah Wall of Faithful Builders in the Chapel. And, you are invited to join us for the Chapel's Ground-Breaking Ceremony on the morning of the Country Fair - Saturday, October 1st at 10:15 a.m. New Life News page 2 A Message from the CEO It seems incredible, but with your help in the past five years, we have increased by hundredfold the number of children and their families we have helped! In 2010, we served 75 children. Now, in 2015, we've already served 7,844 children--including 641 in residence and 7,209 served by our behavioral health specialists in satellite offices and schools. We have made your donations stretch further and served more children in crisis than ever before in Youth For Tomorrow's history. But, as you can imagine, we are stretched to the limit. Private funding has made it possible for YFT to meet the challenges of our community's at-risk children. Five years ago, it was necessary for private sector donations to meet 56% of our costs. In 2015, became necessary for our private sector donors to meet only 19% of our costs. That is an improvement, due to increased private payers and state and local funding--but with so many more children to serve, it is a very significant sum. We continue to need your help! Our financial need remains with us because children in desperate need keep coming-- and they do so with inadequate state and local funding. Without YFT's help, they would go unserved. Who are these kids served by our behavioral health service professionals? These are the kids "on the brink." They are in crisis, but not yet so dysfunctional and self-destructive that they have had to be removed from their families or suspended from school. Nor have they created a criminal behavior pattern, need to be removed from the community or placed in YFT's residential services. But they are children with personal behavior problems that need care far beyond what public-funded agencies and programs can offer. Local school systems, social services, probation services or foster care simply do not have the resources or the level of expertise and experience developed by Youth For Tomorrow. We can help these children. Without help, any one of them could become the next emergency or even headline case. Shocking to you, I am sure. Surprising to me? Not after 28 years of seeing children who are victims of parental neglect, physical abuse in the home, bullying in public schools (an increasingly serious cause of emotional and psychological issues), malnourished elementary kids going to their local public school and girls being prostituted by a parent to pay for the parent's drug habits. To provide the lifeline they need, we require your assistance! The Youth For Tomorrow Needs List: Basic and Fundamental Needs! o Funding for the unfunded domestic girls who are victims of sexual exploitation and trafficking by adult males; o Clothing for our children in the Behavioral Health Program from impoverished families coming to school hungry - and cold --during the winter months; o Scholarships for our graduates--program and high school--who qualify for college or vocational schools; o Funds to support Pastor Denny Glusko and the numerous spiritual activities he has scheduled for the Chapel; o Sponsorships for the October 1st Country Fair and Auctions, Heart 2 Heart Gala in February or the Burgundy & Gold Banquet in May. These funds go directly to support the residential, counseling and educational needs of all our children. Those are the children YFT serves. And, as a donor you are in partnership with us to serve them. They need you! Send your gift for them to: YFT, 11385 Hazel Circle Drive, Bristow, VA, 20136. In doing so, remember, what the Lord's grace and wisdom tells us: "Whatsoever you do for the least of mine, my brothers and sisters, you do for me." -Matthew: 25:40. Gratefully, Gary Jones Chief Executive Officer, Youth For Tomorrow New Life News page 3 Reflections on Music Therapy By Scott W. Gosline, Music Teacher at YFT Deep down, every music lover knows that music is therapeutic. This has been known since David played his harp to comfort King Saul. Looking back over the past 37 years, I guess music therapy has always been my destiny, calling or what have you. I remember as a young boy attending a YMCA summer camp in upstate New York. They had a great jazz band there (The Rhythm Ramblers). This band accompanied the Saturday night shows. While most kids there dreamed of playing in the Super Bowl or on the Yankees, I took a look at the drummer of that band and instantly, this became my childhood dream. A few years later I became the drummer of the Ramblers and I had a blast. My last year there, I happened to be one of the leaders who was responsible for a young boy on a scholarship program from inner city Harlem, named Hank. To say the least, Hank was a tough kid to deal with. At lunch time I'd have to hold on to him while he yelled and screamed and wrestled with his inner fears. I tried to comfort him as best I could. I was a teenager at the time. He happened to have an amazing voice and at the end of the summer the Ramblers played the jazz classic "Brotherhood of Man" (Woodie Herman - Thundering Herd). Hank sang beautifully and I was"in the zone" as the drummer that night. I can't remember ever playing as well as a teenager or having such meaningful fun. It was the last show I played at that camp. That night we slept out on the rocks and as I looked out over Lake Champlain, at the stars, I felt, for at least a moment that I was in tune with nature and with God's purpose. I graduated with a double major in Psychology and Music from Boston U. I fell in love and married a woman named Sue, from Wheelock College, whose music professor just happened to be the jazz band director of the Rhythm Ramblers (small world). Sue is now the Director of The Holy Comforter Episcopal Pre-School in Vienna, Virginia. While Sue and I lived in Boston, I was performing and heading into symphony work, but, for some reason, couldn't shake the idea of music therapy. The only place in Boston that had a music therapy program was McLean Hospital which dealt with psychiatric issues. They told me, at the time, that there was nothing to this field. Interestingly, you'll never guess whose musical career began in the McLean Hospital music therapy and drug rehab program. It was James Taylor! Every time I listen to James sing, I am reminded once again that there really is something very special about the field of music therapy! Sue and I finally left Boston, packed everything we owned into a Ryder Truck and moved to Miami, where I went to graduate school for music therapy. For the past 37 years I've been a practicing music therapist in the Fairfax County Public Schools and for 12 years with Youth For Tomorrow. I couldn't be more grateful! I can honestly say that I could not have asked for a more rewarding career than the experiences I've had as a music therapist! Now that I'm approaching the sunset of my career in music therapy, my perspective has changed somewhat. I now see that making a real difference in one student's life each year is a pretty good batting average! Conversely, when most of us look back over our lives, we can honestly name only one or two teachers who truly turned our lives around. Last year, Christian Furman was that student. To say that Christian had a passion for the drums was a huge understatement! He lived and breathed drums and he never tired of practicing and learning new things for hours on end. His biggest problem was that he would get frustrated with himself. I constantly had to remind him that learning to play the drums takes time and patience and that it always should be fun! After all, Christian was playing on Lew Whiticar's drum kit. Lew's final request before his untimely death a few years ago was that his drum kit be used to help young people find some joy in life and discover a love for playing music. Christian finally learned this lesson well and by the end of Continued on Page 4 New Life News page 4 Reflections on Music Therapy By Scott W. Gosline, Music Teacher at YFT the year he was playing for large YFT audiences and loving every minute of it! During the YFT graduation ceremony, Christian received a special award for outstanding achievement in music. During the summer, Christian continued to grow, not only musically, but spiritually. At the end of the summer, he brought joy to all around him as he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Lord and Savior. Robert Hill was especially close to him during this time. Robert is continuing his studies for the ministry. In celebration of Christian's growth, YFT has put together a drum set for him to enjoy as he welcomes the new adventures ahead as he is reunited with family and is living with his grandmother. A part of this drum set includes a cymbal given to me by my parents as I played for the Rhythm Ramblers as a teenager, so many years ago. My father attended this same camp when he was a boy. He was raised by a single mom, so the head of the camp, affectionately named "Chief," became a father figure to him. "Chief " introduced Dad to Christianity in action. My father became a world famous Psychiatrist and a Colonel and Commander of a military reserve hospital, but he never forgot the lessons he learned from "Chief." Dad came to visit during one of the graduations of the students with whom I work. He has always been my hero, with all that he accomplished in his life. At that time, he said something which continues to bring me much peace. He said, "You know, it seems that we all try to look for something more than Christ in life. There really is nothing more than Christ." The cymbal on that drum set is a small personal gift, and hopefully a reminder of Christian's personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Coincidentally, many years ago, Christian's dad attended YFT. There have been some amazing and wonderful moments throughout this year where Christian and his dad have reconnected. Often, music has provided a welcoming bridge for joyful reconnection of father and son. Of all the things we celebrate at YFT, the growth in Grace which we see in students like Christian, should be right up there at the very top of our list! On Thursday, September 15th, I delivered the drum set to Christian and it was one of the most wonderful moments I've ever experienced...one I will always treasure. Christian was surprised and happy to see me, and when he glanced in the back of my car and saw the drum set, he couldn't contain his excitement. He quickly brought his grandmother out to meet me and together we all set up the drum set in the living room in front of the fireplace. It reminded me of Christmas morning. Dr. Jones had given me a call just before I arrived and he asked that I check on Christian's progress in school. He especially wanted me to offer Christian and his grandmother YFT's continued and complete support. Christian's grandmother told me that Christian was doing very well in school and that he was highly motivated and excited. She said that she was very proud of him. Christian enthusiastically told me that he was taking percussion lessons in school. He was learning to read music and learning some basic technique on snare drum. He also said that he was hoping to study percussion in college. I encouraged him and told him to stick with it, even when the going seems difficult. I also told him that he always played best when he relaxed and enjoyed the learning process. The moment that stands out especially, in my heart, was when I gave Christian the cymbal which my parents had given me when they recognized my love for the drums. This was a turning point New Life News page 5 Reflections on Music Therapy By Scott W. Gosline, Music Teacher at YFT for all of us. Somehow, we all became caught up in the fact that this cymbal represented the special place Christian holds in the heart of Dr. Jones and all of YFT. I also echoed my father's words "...it seems that we all try to look for something more than Christ in life. There really is nothing more than Christ!" At this point, and for much of the rest of the conversation, we talked of how Robbie Hill had made such a difference in Christian's life and how, with his help, Christian had accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior. This, of course, is the greatest Gift of all. At the end of the visit, Christian and I played the song, "Our God is Greater" together. I told Dr. Jones that it was a great start. This was an understatement! Sincerely, Scott W. Gosline Pictured is David Hunt, Christian's Dad and YFT Alum 1987 with Dr. Gary Jones during a visit to the YFT campus in August. David has started his own plumbing company in Tennessee. Ms. Sara Heflin and her Students Proudly Presented, the Poetry Slam Many student at YFT possesses a multiplicity of talents which was revealed in the spellbinding poetic presentation which captivated all in attendance at this summer's Poetry Slam. YFT's English instructor, Ms. Sara Heflin, orchestrated this event in which participants exemplified their various creative capabilities and showed appreciable courage by assuming center stage to share their poetic creations. The poetry slam was more than an exhibition of their creativity, it was an opportunity to showcase resident's hidden imaginative potential and share in creative expression their internal thoughts about life, and feelings in their hearts and souls. The new home will enable YFT to provide residential services to an additional 36 girls each year who are pregnant teens, young mothers, homeless, runaways or survivors of sex trafficking. The residence is the second group home donated and built for YFT by HomeAid Northern Virginia. HomeAid Northern Virginia builds and renovates homeless shelters and housing facilities via the donated expertise, labor and resources of local homebuilders - enabling nonprofit organizations like Youth For Tomorrow to invest more of their budgets in supportive programs and services rather than building expenses. The construction of the new 5,000 sq. ft. girls residence, named the Brenda House, was led by HANV project "Builder Captain" Toll Brothers and 60 Trade Partners (suppliers, manufacturers, subcontractors) who donated expertise, labor and/or materials to the project. "At Toll Brothers, we know that a community is made up of more than houses, and that it is only as strong as the people in it. We believe in giving back to the community and our collaboration with HomeAid to lead the construction of this new girls residence for Youth For Tomorrow is a meaningful opportunity for us to make a difference. We are proud to have played this role in providing a safe haven of hope for the young women who will be calling it home," said Toll Brothers Regional President Bill Gilligan. The new home construction is a $592,000 investment - of which 33% was donated by HomeAid, Toll Brothers and its trade partners. YFT philanthropist, Mr. Bob Wiser, generously donated the remaining funds for this, the 6th girl's home in Wiser Village. The Brenda House is named after Mr. Wiser's niece who recently passed away and whom he dearly loved and admired. I believe there is nothing more important in life than what we leave behind in terms of how we have helped others. It is our Enduring Legacy. Years from now no one will remember who had a great season or who won the Super Bowl. That’s why Youth For Tomorrow is so important to me. For each young man and woman that we are able to help, we start a chain of good results because he or she will influence his or her own spouse and children and others around them. And they will pass along what they have learned to others. What will last in this world is what kind of influence we have had on others. Coach Joe Gibbs THANKS TO OUR 2016 SPONSORS! Jones, CEO Susan LaPierre, President Board of Trustees Dedication of the Peterson Family Chapel A Message from the CEO Faith is at the foundation of all we do at Youth For Tomorrow. The Lord’s word and His grace and forgiveness are central to helping our children heal and build lives of character, faith and integrity. The October 7 Chapel dedication is the culmination of a goal – actually a dream – long-held by YFT staff and Trustees. The new Chapel, the Peterson Family Chapel, is in honor of their major philanthropy in constructing the Chapel on the YFT campus. It is the spiritual centerpiece of our campus and offers a place of peace and reflection for our children who, after lives of abandonment and abuse, are searching for hope, healing and a future they never dreamed possible. This is a sacred parcel of land, and on it is constructed a sacred building to serve the Lord’s mission and the children He directs our way. Here they will receive the love and welcome they need, together with the professional services provided by YFT’s highly trained, faithfully dedicated and compassionate professional (continued on page 2) Saturday, October 7 10 am – 5 pm staff. From this day forward, this 7,900 sq. ft., 360seat Chapel will provide an opportunity for important pastoral care programs, Bible study and spiritual counseling, and it will provide a place for praise and worship for our students as they choose to reflect on their faith and their lives. We are eternally grateful for the philanthropy provided by one of Northern Virginia’s most eminent entrepreneurial and philanthropic families – the Milt Peterson family, which has generously provided the major gift to establish this “cornerstone of spiritual symbolism” on our campus. From this will flow the love of the Lord for his children and those of us who are Dedication of the Peterson Family Chapel to be held the Morning of the Country Fair at 10 am. Photos by Love D. Jones New Life News page 2 A Message from the CEO, continued destined to toil in His vineyard here for generations to come. The Peterson family has played an indispensable role in the founding and direction of Youth For Tomorrow. Milt Peterson has been a benefactor starting with the very first fundraiser in 1983, committing resources for the small Christian Group Home for boys that was only a dream proposed by Joe Gibbs. Son Jon has been a strategic and influential leader on the Board of Trustees for the last 20 years, including two terms as President. The Peterson family’s dedication to Youth For Tomorrow is likewise embraced by many of the professional employees at the Peterson Companies who are equally enthusiastic volunteers and supporters. Each year, the Peterson Companies staff engage their tenants and contractors in initiatives supporting YFT from the annual YFT Golf Classic, which Jon has chaired for 15 years, to donating auction items and financial support for the Peterson Companies Market Square Silent Auction at the Annual Country Fair and Auctions. Many others also have generously and graciously provided support to the Chapel and each of you has your name placed with honor on the Nehemiah Wall of Faithful Builders in the Chapel Narthex. Furthermore, let me make note of eight specific individuals: 1) 2) 3) 4) One of YFT’s most honored, admired and most generous philanthropists, the late Mr. Bob Wiser; A lady loved by all who know her – Eleanor Hazel -- and wife of our late and esteemed leader and philanthropist – Bill Hazel, one of YFT’s CoFounders; And, there are four other YFT Co-Founders who are substantial donors to this Chapel –Steve Templeton, Bruce Eberle, Renny Barnes and Gary Garczynski; And, of course, Joe Gibbs – the Founder of YFT. YFT was his idea – his dream – one which has grown from serving four boys in 1986 to serving boys and girls from throughout the Commonwealth, the Nation and even from various parts of the world. To all who pledged their gifts to the Enduring Legacy Capital Campaign of which this Chapel is an essential part -- we thank you all. Gratefully, Gary L. We are extremely proud of the exceptional planning, preparation and presentations required by the YFT professional staff to achieve this distinguished honor. NOTE: In its final response to YFT, the Joint Commission President stated in his transmittal letter announcing our accreditation. “As a result of the accreditation activity conducted between July 11-15, 2017 Accreditation Is Awarded: No Requirements for Improvement Identified.” “Joint Commission accreditation provides behavioral health care organizations with the processes needed to improve in a variety of areas related to the care of individuals and their families,” said Julia Finken, RN, BSN, MBA, CSSBB, CPHQ, Executive Director, Behavioral Health Care Accreditation Program, The Joint Commission. “We commend Youth For Tomorrow for its efforts to elevate the Standard of Care it provides and to instill confidence in the community it serves.” The Joint Commission accredits and certifies more than 21,000 health care organizations and programs in the United States. Their mission is to continuously improve health care for the public, in collaboration with other stakeholders, by evaluating health care organizations and inspiring them to excel in providing safe and effective care of the highest quality and value. To date there are only six other facilities similar to YFT that have Joint Commission accreditation in Virginia, and three of those are affiliated with United Health Care, and only one comes close to the extent of services we provide at YFT.
