Known as the West Van Buren Area (WVBA) groundwater plume, the impacted area extends from McDowell Road to Buckeye Road, and from 7th Avenue to beyond 79th Avenue. Why is RID doing this? More than 20 RID wells located in the area have been impacted by the contamination and more than 10 additional RID wells are threatened. RID intends to remove the contamination in order to make the water safe for use by West Valley businesses and residents. Why a ?pilot system?? Initially, four wells are being treated in order to demonstrate the systems? effectiveness as a solution for treating groundwater. Who is paying for this project? RID has contracted with Spinnaker Holdings, LLC, of Denison, Texas, to provide the design, construction and operation of the facilities for the Pilot Treatment System. To recover costs associated with the cleanup, RID has filed a $40 million civil action lawsuit against more than 60 Potentially Responsible Parties (PRPs) under the federal Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA) of 1980 (also called ?Superfund?).
