IBM T. J. WATSON RESEARCHCENTER 1101KitchawanRoad,P.O.Box218,YorktownHeights, NY 10598 September 10,2008 To Whom It May Concern: This is to certify that Dr. Dong Kam hasworked full time (40 hours/week)as a Postdoctoral Researcher from May 23,2007to August15,2008,andhasbeenworking full time (40 hours/week) StaffMembersinceAugust16,2008at the IBM asa Research ThomasJ. WatsonResearchCenter,Yorktown Heights,New York, and is still actively employedin that position.During this period, both Dr. Kam and I havebelongedto the samedepartment, andI am currentlyhis manager. Dr. Kam's researchhasbeenin the areaof signalintegritydesignand analysisfor high-speedI/O subsystems. One of the projectshe hasbeenworking on involveslinklevel analysisand optimizationfor high-speedand high-densityon-boardlinks. More specifically,Dr. Kam investigatedpracticaldistanceand speedlimits for electricaland opticalmodule-to-module on-boardlinks includingstate-of-the-art circuit andpackaging technologies.Hardware-validated models of advancedorganic modules and printed circuit boards were used to explore these limits. Simulation of link performance performedwith an internallink modelingtool basedon his link model allowedus to explorethe effect of equalizationand modulationformatsat differentdatarateson link bit error rate and eye opening. The SystemTechnologyGroup as well as many other groupsin IBM will benefitfrom this work. Dr. Kam has also contributedto the standardization activity of OIF, the only industrygroupuniting representatives from dataand optical networkingdisciplines. He has actively participatedin technical discussionsfor signaling convention,Tx/Rx equalization, referencechannelmodels, and link-level simulation. He providedtechnical basis and insightsto the Physicaland Link Layer (PLL) Working Group in OIF, and playeda pivotal role in establishing the CEI-25standard. Dr. Kam is currentlymaking pioneeringcontributionstowardsthe researchof millimeterwave(-60 GHz) antenna-in-package development. As the packageplaysa key role in the overall systemperformanceand cost, the significantof Dr. Kam's research cannotbe overemphasized. Dr. Kam's aforementionedcontributionshave resultedin I joumal paper, 4 conferencepapers, and I BestPaperAward to date. Sincerely, / BriarfFloyd,Ph/.D.{ Manager,RF & WirelessCircuitsandSystems IBM T.
