Can I call you? Best number? Get Outlook for iOS From: Nick Beckwith Sent: Thursday, July 19, 2018 12:59 PM To: Gilman, Daniel Subject: UPMC and City Council Hi Dan. I was going to call until learning from Laurie that you're on vacation. In my book, interrupting a very well earned vacation with a telephone call is taboo. Consequently this email as a more acceptable way, under the circumstances, of speaking to the same issue. As you know well, there was a raucous and nearly endless display of virtually unrestrained vitriol directed towards UPMC at the City Council meeting held for comment, pro and con, on UPMC Mercy's variance request to build its Vision and Rehabilitation Tower on the site originally intended for a new hospital power plant. The allegations against UPMC for all imaginable forms of corporate malfeasance, abuse of community and employees and generally unrepentant behavior were categorically without foundation and presented solely for extortive purposes. As a longtime supporter of UPMC Shadyside and UPMC generally, you are well versed in all that UPMC has done to provide world class healthcare throughout its service territory and to be a continually outstanding corporate citizen, as exhibited through innumerable forms of outreach to those in need. A couple of things are clear. First, UPMC is not going to be extorted or wrongfully coerced. Secondly Western Pa needs and will greatly benefit from UPMC's Vision and Rehabilitation Institute as it will similarly from the Heart and Oncology initiatives planned for Presby and Shadyside. Attempts to derail or delay hurt everyone. I'm respectfully asking for the help of the Mayor and you in bringing clarity to City Council over all that's at stake in an effort to assure a vote next week affirming UPMC Mercy's project without further obstruction or delay. As Chair of UPMC's Board, I'm communicating on the Board's behalf and additionally, like so many of us, as a beneficiary of UPMC's exemplary care. Many thanks, Dan, and enjoy vacation. As always my best 1 Nick
