PKU-UCSD Forum on Translational Medicine January 16th-17th, 2010 Shenzhen, China Conference Announcement Organized by: Institute of Molecular Medicine, Peking University Peking University Graduate School at Shenzhen Institute for Genomic Medicine, University of California, San Diego Sponsor: Hertzberg Family Foundation A global environment now exists where scientists have access to remarkable tools that allow rigorous translational investigations to be conducted. Creative and complementary expertise among basic and clinical scientists, with minimal or no institutional or disciplinary barriers is one of the keys for the future success of translational medicine. Translating advanced scientific knowledge into clinical application to save lives and improve health is the theme of this conference, with a focus on genetics and stem cell approaches to understanding and treating Parkinson's disease. We will use this opportunity to discuss state of the art basic research progress, and to hear reports of investigations of cell transplantation to treat Parkinson's disease by one of the top Chinese neurosurgery teams. We hope that this symposium will promote exchange among different groups, forge collaborations, and develop unified recommendations on how we can best advance science and therapies for untreatable diseases in a safe and controlled way. The PKU-UCSD Forum on Translational Medicine is jointly hosted by Peking University Graduate School at Shenzhen, the newly launched Institute for Genomic Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and the Institute of Molecular Medicine at Peking University. We are also delighted to celebrate the birth of the “Drug Discovery Center of Peking University-Shenzhen Graduate School”. The Forum will be held in Shenzhen, one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in South-eastern China, on January 16th-17th, 2010. Over 30 world-class experts are expected from the China, the U.S.A. and other countries to give presentations, introducing the latest progress in their research towards translational medicine. These include: 1) Neurodegeneration: genetics and stem cell therapy 2) Cardiovascular diseases: non-human primate models and drug discovery 3) Chemical biology We gratefully acknowledge the generosity and support of the Hertzberg Family Foundation for this conference.
