STATE OF NEW JERSEY VS. BRANDON A. BEVERLY PROBABLE CAUSE STATEMENT CASE NO. HM-0020-19-07 WARRANT N0. On Monday, July 1, 2019, at approximately 2:14 Camden County Metro Police Department of?cers were dispatched to the 1000 block of Mechanic Street for a report of a missing person. Upon of?cers? arrival, they spoke with witnesses who stated that the victim, Curtis Jenkins (DOB: was missing. A witness reported that on Sunday, June 30, 2019, at approximately 11:00 pm, lie/she and Curtis Jenkins drove to 2700 block of North Congress Road in Camden to deliver food. HeXshe stated that Curtis Jenkins parked their vehicle and walked in the direction of the residence. He/ she stated after approximately forty -?ve (45) minutes, Curtis Jenkins did not return to the vehicle, so he/ she left and returned to Mechanic Street. Detectives Spoke with members of the Jenkins family who advised that at approximately 4:00 a.rn., they received a telephone call from an unfamiliar number. The caller advised a family member that they had Curtis Jenkins and he would not be released until the family met their ransom demand. The family member then received a text message containing a picture of Curtis Jenkins who was blindfolded with his hands tied behind his back. A family member of the victim was able to identify the voice on the phone making the ransom demand. The family member identi?ed the voice as belonging to the defendant, Brandon A. Beverly. Detectives identified a witness who was the registered owner of the telephone number that contacted the Jenkins family. The witness relayed that during the early morning hours of July 1, he was at a friend?s residence in the area of Third Street and Kaighn Avenues in Camden when two (2) unknown black males entered the residence with guns and took everyone?s cellphones. An additional witness provided a description of the two black males: a young black male wearing a blue hoodie and tan pants; and a young black male wearing a gray hoodie and black pants. Detectives recovered surveillance video from the area of Third Street and Kaighn Avenues in Camden. The surveillance video depicts a Blue Chevrolet Uplander, later identi?ed as hearing NJ registration K72LCR, arriving in the area of the 300 block of Kaighn Avenue. Two black males matching the description provided by the witnesses exit the van in the area of the 200 block of Sycamore and return to the van a short time later. Automated License Plate Readers tracked the same Chevrolet Uplander entering the Fairview section of Camden City at 10:54 pm and leaving at 11:28 pm on the night of the June 30, 2019, near the time and location of the kidnapping. On July 2, 2019, detectives travelled to the defendant?s residence in \Woodbury, New Jersey. Detectives observed the Blue Chevrolet Uplander arrive at the residence, and defendant as well as an additional individual exited the vehicle and entered the residence. That additional individual was later observed exiting the residence and re-entering the Chevrolet Uplander with a second male. Of?cers conducred a stop of the Chevrolet Uplandet. The additional individual was transported to the Camden County Metro PAB for an interview. Officers made entry into the defendant?s residence in search of Curtis Jenkins During a protective sweep of the residence, of?cers located a handgun on a child?s bunk bed, as well as a wallet containing the identi?cation of one of the victims from the robber}1r at Third Street and Kaighn Avenues, where the phone used to make the ransom demand was taken. Defendant and an additional male were located inside the residence at the time of entry. The individual located in the Chevrolet Uplander provided detectives with a taped statement. He/ she advised that he/ she knows the defendant. The individual stated that he/ she met with the defendant on the morning of the Jul},r 1, 2019. Defendant was crying and informed the individual that things got messed up. The individual stated that defendant and an unidenti?ed female ordered a platter of food from Curtis Jenkins and that the female provided the address for delivery near the 2700 block of North Congress Road in Camden. Defendant stated that he met with several males on North Congress Road and they forced Curtis Jenkins into the van against his will. Defendant stated that Curtis Jenkins was bound, blind-folded and was driven throughout the streets of Camden. The individual stated that defendant told him/ her that he made several attempts to contact the Jenkins family to demand a ransom but was unsuccessful. Defendant advised that he became frustrated at the failed ransom attempts and that he shot Curtis Jenkins and left him in a garage on the 1100 block of Liberty Street. The individual was transported to the 1100 block of Liberty Street where he/ she identi?edthe garage that the defendant had access to. Detectives made entry into the identified garage on the 1100 block of Liberty Street where they located Curtis Jenkins 111. He was wrapped in a sheet, his hands and feet bound together, with a plastic bag covering his head. He was pronounced deceased at 10:10 pm by Dr. Carol of Cooper University Hospital. On July 3, 2019, Dr. Gerald Feigin of the Camden/Gloucester/Salem County Medical} Examiner?s Of?ce conducted a posr-mortem examination on Curtis Jenkins Dr. Feigin ruled the cause of death to be and the manner of death to be homicide.
