After six years with no results in 3rd grade end of grade reading testing under North Carolina’s
Read to Achieve Law, state leaders were right to demand a revamp of the program. State education
leaders opted to replace the previous program - Amplify’s mClass that studies showed delivered
no progress statewide - with Istation, a company that provides assessments and tools with proven
results to more than four million students across the country.
Unfortunately, there are people, including those likely running for political office against the
state’s Superintendent of Public Instruction, who have chosen to use the contract award process
to their benefit and in doing so are misrepresenting Istation by making false, misleading and
defamatory public statements about the company, its products and/or the process by which Istation
was awarded the contract to serve North Carolina’s students.
While we appreciate that there are privacy and personnel issues surrounding the public release of
all aspects of the state’s contract process, including details related to a possible committee
member who may have once been employed by Amplify, Istation can no longer ignore the
misinformation that is being disseminated to unfairly harm and malign Istation.
Istation was legally and appropriately awarded the contract in North Carolina and has a proven
record and reputation as an industry leader in early education assessments across the country.
The cease and desist notices provided are a lawful and appropriate starting point to end the
misinformation, set the record straight, protect Istation’s interests, and let the state move forward.
Istation looks forward to serving North Carolina’s school children beginning this school year and
remains confident that the state’s students will be better off in the years ahead than they are today.
