I am a Detective Constable attached to Special Branch, New Scotland Yard, SW1. 0n the Sunday 9 August 1970, at 1 pm I was directed by a senior officer to attend a demonstration organised by coloured peeple to protest against alleged police oppression The demonstration was to commence at in the Notting Hill area. I was told that the Mangrove Restaurant, All Saints Road, W11. in view of the violent. sentiments empressed in some of the literature publicising the demonstration it was feared that public disorder might occur. Accordingly I was instructed to take photographs of the demonstration to provide a sequential record of events should disorder ensue. I went directly to the area and joined the demonstrators at Ladbroke Grove, W11, whilst they were apposite Notting Hill Police Station. After some time they moved Off along Ladbroke Grove and I followed the procession. The demonstrators were shouting and chanting a number of slogans. One particularly I remember was "The pigs, Oink, the pigs, oink, we've got to get rid of the pigs Oink. The demonstrators marched to this chant for some few minutes. I don't remember the exact route but I remember crossing the Grand Union Canal at the Halfpenny Steps and then.walking along the Harrow Road, and then later we turned left into ?ortnall Road. ?The demonstration crossed over one junction and was approaching the next when the hand of the procession stopped. I estimate that I was about ten.yards back from the head of the procession on the East pavement (that is on the right hand side of the procession). Suddenly I saw a number of missiles flying through the air. There were milk bottles, pieces of brick, lumps of wood and similar debris. To me they appeared to have come from above. A general melee then ensued between the demonstrators, some of whom appeared to be fighting amongst themselves, and police. I saw three policemen struck by missiles and fall to the ground. I can also remember some of the-women demonstrators crying and saying that this was not the idea at all and appealing to the other demon?trators to stop the fighting. Due to the shower of missiles all around me Vand fearing for my own safety as well as that of my camera I placed_myself with my back to the blank side wall of a house, and reinforcements arrived and order was restored I left when polio the scene. ltogether I took only 46 frames on that day, and of . {ye Signature ?33) STATEMENT OF WITNESS (C.J.
