I just came back from DC, where I did a panel on science communication. One of my panelists was from Monsanto (Janice Person), and when I asked the audience what was the last issue on which you changed your mind, one of them said, "I think I just changed my mind about Monsanto." It is possible to make headway, but I'm convinced it's by person-to-person interactions. Very glad you're doing the work you do! T. I know we spoke of penciling in time that day, and I hope you can still make it. If you were to fly in on Sunday night we could get everyone together for dinner, etc and then the event would be Monday the 11th , we’d have you home Monday night. We’ll cover the costs and an honorarium, whatever that takes. The audience will be scientists, physicians and other professionals that need to learn how to talk to the public. I hope you can still do this. Sorry to be in communicato—had a rough couple of months, catching up today. Subject: Re: Coordinate conference call to discuss Summit "GMO Labeling" session Hi, Kevin -- Happy to talk, and tomorrow's pretty open, so pick a time that works for you. I don't think Rob's wrong at all, but I thought most of the talk was arguments that opponents just roll their eyes at. When I'm writing about these things (and I don't pretend to be persuasive, either -- that's a very high bar that we can only work to reach incrementally, I think), I ask myself "What would Anna Lappe say?" You may have seen her recent opinion piece in Al Jazeera, in which she does ta k specifically about several of the benefits Rob mentioned. I do think his experience in the third world is very important, and I think there are ways it could be presented in a more compelling way. He's out there in the world, working with people for whom this is a life-and-death question, and that carries a lot of weight. But channel Anna, and watch that video. May looks good, and I'd be happy to come to Florida. (Although, if you could move the conference to February, I'd be really happy to get out from under the two feet of snow that fell here!) T.
