Robert w. Edkin R-S 'oinin two anniversary parties THE RCHLIGHT will be joining in two anniversary celebrations that are just around the corner.- First up- is the Sept. 17 celebra- tion of the 200th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution of the United States. Just 39 men, were on hand in Philadelphia to sign the original document in Independence Hall on Sept. 17, 1787. But you?ll be able to. ?add? your own signatures, thanks to a program launched by the California Bicentennial Foun- dation for the U.S. Constitution and sponsored locally by the. RS and at least one other group. The foundation has created full- size facsimile reproductions of the Constitution, printed on ?parch- ment,? with room for 20 signa- tures per copy. Those who sign the Constitution (with a quill pen, no less) will receive an commemo? rative keepsake Constitution re- produced on ?parchment? that can be framed, if desired. We?ve purchased enough mate- rials to permit 5,000 area resi- dents to participate. Another group, led by Marcene Bolton and-Donna Ellis, will be gathering another,2,500 signa- tures. There may be other groups involved, as well. BE KICKING OFF our. own'sign?up program at a booth we?ll be manning next weekend at the Mt. Shasta Mall during its media days promotion; Then be- ginning the following Monday, R-S customers will be able to add their signatures at our office, as well. - A. civic observance of the anni- versary is scheduled at Old City Hall Park at 1 pm. Wednesday, Sept. 17. That same day, we?ll be? manning a booth in The Mall downtown, where you?ll also be able to sign a Constitution and receive your commemorative copy. The signed Constitutions will be returned to the state Bicentennial Foundation for tabulation. They. will also be featured in Califor~ nia?s float in the Rose Parade on New Year?s Day and will then be archived in the Bicentennial Foun- dation?s permanent records. WAITING IN THE WINGS are the windup events to Redding?s yearlong 100th'birthday party. The grand finale is on the week- end of Oct. 3 and 4, with parades, fireworks and more. A celebration like that just wouldn?t be complete without a scrapbook full of snapshots? a kind of municipal family album.
