Impossible Vineyards When I planted a vine in 2009 in Monte Sol, 5km from the Atlantic Ocean on the South west coast of Portugal, I had no experience and very little understanding of the demands expected in how to process and bottle a wine worth drinking. Meeting my two local partners, award winning winemaker José da Mota Capitão www.portocarro.com/en/ and Manuel Ricciardi gave me hope. The vineyard includes 2,000 vines planted in a terroir with an abundance of cork, pine, olive and eucalyptus trees, where wild lavender and rosemary grow throughout. The local shiest, a kind of brittle slate is highly rich in minerals. This isn’t an average wine; this vineyard was planted in a place most winemakers wouldn’t attempt. After years of caring and enduring many unexpected problems finally in 2013 my efforts were rewarded with 1000kg of grapes, which originated in 400L of a remarkable wine which would not have been possible without the talent and expertise of José da Mota Capitão in producing exceptionally good wines. Without trust in my partners the whole adventure would have failed. The grapes were hand-picked and separated from the branch in order not to break them during the process. Prior to bottling the wine was fermented in a 600L French oak barrel and later moved to a 400L aged French oak barrel where it stayed for 36 months. As much as a hazard growing a vine has proven to be the results have been exceptional and Monti Sol Project’s wine from an Impossible Vineyard is now finally ready for release. The bespoke magnum 1.5L bottle entirely manufactured in Portugal is for an industrial bottle a first of its type. Each box is exclusive and numbered as an edition of 250. The blend of thirteen different varieties including Touriga National, Aragonês and Cabernet have delivered an eternal exceptional blend to be enjoyed at any time in the next thirty years. This is due to the proximity of the sea, the acidity of the soil and the tannins found in the terroir. The ‘field blend’ grants an impressive complexity, elegance and finesse. Truly unique this wine represents the purest essence of Portuguese reds. JM
