MENTAL HEALTH COUNSELING Mental Health counselors are available to provide counseling for any problems you may be having while in jail or being separated from family/friends. Conversations with Mental Health counselors are confidential, although the counselors may share selective information in classification meetings and with correctional officers about your security or housing assignment. At any time during your stay if you want to speak with a mental health counselor please complete a request slip or ask a correctional officer if the matter is urgent. EMERGENCY HEALTH CARE: NOTIFY A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER IMMEDIATELY OF ANY EMERGENCY HEALTH CARE NEED. Examples of emergency health care situations are: Heart Attack Broken Bones Serious illness or injury Bleeding Poor Vital Signs Shock Unconsciousness MEDICAL CARE Medical care is accessible while you are in the jail. The nurses and physicians who work at the jail are professionals. You are expected to respect and obey them. All medical care including medications and treatments are under the direction of the Medical Director while you are in the jail. HOW TO REQUEST MEDICAL CARE: Medical care is available 24 hours a day 7 days a week and it will not be refused and denied if you are unable to pay. If you are unable to pay for medical services or medication, your inmate account will still be debited and you will carry a negative balance until the debt is paid, but you cannot be denied care. To request medical care complete an “Inmate Health Request” form and give it to a correctional officer. It is mandatory to complete an “Inmate Health Request” form for any medical services. In an emergency there is no need to complete the Inmate Health Request. Your signature on the Inmate Health Request gives your consent for medical treatment. MEDICATION: Medication will be taken in the presence of the Correctional Officer or nurse passing out the medication. You cannot under any circumstances stockpile medication. You do have the right to refuse prescribed medication. Inform the officer or nurse that you wish to refuse the medication. You will be required to fill out a “Refusal of Treatment” form. PHYSICAL: You are required to submit to a physical examination screening and TB test within 14 days of arriving at the jail. This examination is a requirement of Illinois law and the Illinois Jail Standards. For the safety of others if you refuse the examination you will be placed in medical segregation until the exam is completed. 3 FLU SHOTS: Flu shots will be available upon request September 1 st – March 31st at no cost. SEXUALLY TRANSMITTED DISEASE (STD) SCREENING: Champaign County Public Health comes to the jail weekly. If you would like to be tested for a sexually transmitted disease please submit a medical request. You will also have the opportunity to request a STD test at your 14 day physical. MEDICAL CO-PAYMENT: Inmates are charged for medical care that they request to receive through the Doctor or Nurse. This includes a charge for prescribed or over the counter medications: The following medical services will require a co-payment Sick Call (initiated by the inmate) $0 Doctor Visit $0 Dietary Service $5 X-ray Service $5 Laboratory Analysis $5 Prescription: Initial $3 Prescription: Refill $0 Over the Counter Medications – Single dose $1 Over the Counter Medications – Prescribed $3 Topical Medication (lotion, cream, ointments, etc) $3 The following medical services will be FREE of charge: Sick Call (initiated by medical staff) Follow Up Visits Initiated by Medical Staff 14 Day Physical Examination Medical Emergency (as determined by medical staff) Mental Health Services Sexually Transmitted Disease Testing and Treatment REPORTING SEXUAL ABUSE/ASSAULT Get to a safe place. Report the attack to personnel immediately. The longer you wait, the more difficult it is to obtain the evidence necessary for a criminal and or administrative investigation. Request immediate medical attention; you may have serious injuries that you are not aware of and any sexual contact can expose you to sexually transmitted diseases. Do not shower, brush your teeth (if the abuse/assault was oral), use the washroom or change clothes. This may destroy important evidence. TREATMENT AND COUNSELING FOR SEXUAL ABUSE/ASSAULT VICTIMS Victims of sexual abuse/assault will be given evaluations and treatment by medical personnel for any injuries due to sexual abuse/assault. Victims may also receive counseling from mental health staff. DAILY SCHEDULE Upon wake up call, all inmates are required to be fully dressed for inspections and to clean their living areas.
