We have been working with Bright Moments and the OPSB Facilities Advisory Group (comprised of
community leaders) to review planning data. During the April Facilities Advisory Group meeting we
will discuss the most effective strategies to fully engage the community in this conversation.

 Educational Adequacy




For high schools the following spaces are typically used in analyzing educational
& functional adequacy:
 Gymnasium/physical education
 3 buildings currently used as high schools have no gymnasium
 Performing arts/visual arts
 All high schools have rooms that could support the arts, but many do not
have important features such as sound proofing (band) or a sink (visual
arts)
 Cafeteria size
 2 high schools have cafeterias that will not seat 1/3 of average program
capacity
A major consideration for addressing educational adequacy is whether the site is
large enough to support an addition if one is needed.

The Facility Condition Index (FCI) formula is:

Cost to Repair/Cost to Replace = FCI %


Examples:

Cost to Repair = $8,000,000
Cost to Replace = $10,000,000
$8,000,000/$10,000,000 = 80%
Cost to Repair = $2,000,000
Cost to Replace = $10,000,000
$2,000,000/$10,000,000 = 20%
