Request for Analysis of Shooting Death of Mary Hawkes

Dear District Attorney Torrez,
Today, the Office of the Attorney General received a hand-delivered package from your office
requesting that our office review the shooting death of Mary Hawkes on April 14, 2014, after
your office released findings by two Special Prosecutors on February 7, 2018 and subsequently
referred to a panel of three elected District Attorneys in October 2018.
I am writing to inform you that Joshua Hawkes, who has served as a longtime member of senior
law enforcement in our office, is next of kin to Mary Hawkes, whose family is represented by
Kennedy Kennedy & Ives in the ongoing civil matter. As such, while the Office of the Attorney
General is disqualified from ultimately prosecuting this matter, we are willing to consult with
your office in order to promptly take steps to allocate necessary resources to this matter if, in
fact, you feel it is justified to prosecute based on your review.

 These case reviews are very important, and I am requesting a meeting with your senior
leadership to discuss creating a more effective system for review of these cases. We look forward
to collaborating with your office on future matters.
