Quick Notes for Representative Assembly Members to Share at Department Meetings June 4, 2019 Representative Assembly meeting.* San Diego Divisional Chair Robert Horwitz’ Remarks June 2019 RA Presentations Chancellor Pradeep Khosla’s Announcements  The Chancellor reminded Representative Assembly members that we are all in one boat together, and that we need to work together to move the campus forward. The quality of education provided and the reputation of UCSD should be front and center, but bills also have to be paid.  Although there was initial resistance to Masters degrees, they now generate $70M in revenue for the campus.  The campus budget was finalized this week and the Chancellor mentioned the investments being made to instructional and student success, to faculty hiring, and to research and infrastructure support. Additional details are available online at the following link. Approved 2019-2020 Operating Budget  The campus is facing a potential future fiscal disaster. This year, the campus ended with a budget surplus (~$28M) and next year is projected to be a breakeven year, but the campus faces a projected deficit (~$24M) by 2021-22, which will grow (by ~$35M) each year.  A member asked for more information regarding the fiscal disaster. The Chancellor explained that despite the hard work of the faculty, and the fact that our reputation is strong, our publications are strong, and our research volume is $1.2 billion, we need $35 million in additional funding from the state each year to stay afloat. The Chancellor reiterated that we have be true to our mission and who we are, but have to generate revenue too.
