To: Breed, Mayor London (MYR) , Matt Haney CC: Lloyd, Kayleigh (DPW) , Ostly, Thomas (DAT) , RivamonteMesa, Abigail (BOS) , Tugbenyoh, Mawuli (MYR) As of today I closed my business, Mr. Smith’s. Rampant open air drug dealing and drug use has completely taken over my block. My employees quit, my customers disappeared, no one wants to be on my block, including me. As a native San Franciscan it makes me sick to say that. Shame on all of you for letting our streets get so horrific that small businesses can not survive. The lack of action from anyone in our local government outside of the SFPD makes me so frustrated that for the first time in my life I am actually debating leaving the city where I grew up, where I’m raising my 4th generation San Franciscan kids and where I have my businesses. I have been in this location and done well for 19 years. I have employed San Franciscans, supported local businesses and suppliers, paid my taxes, and pay for a CBD on top of that to pick up where the city has failed. I’ve done my job. You need to do yours. Calling in the Feds was a start but why not enact, enforce or write similar laws locally? You are wasting all the progress that has been made in the mid market neighborhood. It used to be a ghost town and now there are offices, apartments and condos where there were vacancies. But no one wants to walk the streets. Our neighbors don’t go out at night. Office workers leave the neighborhood as soon as they can. Small businesses are closing consistently. It’s pretty simple. Your streets will never improve without open storefronts. Stores won’t open if the streets aren’t safe. DO SOMETHING! Max Young
