METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT Peter Newsham OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS Dustin Sternbeck Chief of Police Director NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Public Information Office: 202- 727-4383 September 23, 2019 Homicide: 1300 Block of Morris Road, Southeast (Washington, DC) – Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred on Sunday, September 22, 2019, in the 1300 block of Morris Road, Southeast. At approximately 9:52 pm, members of the Seventh District responded to the listed location for the report of the sounds of gunshots. Upon arrival, officers located a juvenile male suffering from a gunshot wound. DC Fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene and found that the victim displayed no signs consistent with life. The decedent remained on the scene until transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Additionally, officers canvassed the area and located two juvenile males suffering from non-life threatening gunshot wounds. DC Fire and EMS personnel transported the victims to local hospitals for treatment. The decedent has been identified as 17 year-old Jamel Kirkland, of Southeast, DC. The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia.
