METROPOLITAN POLICE DEPARTMENT Peter Newsham OFFICE OF COMMUNICATIONS Dustin Sternbeck Chief of Police Director NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release Public Information Office: 202- 727-4383 October 1, 2019 Traffic Fatality: Intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Malcolm X Avenue, Southeast (Washington, DC) – Detectives with the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are investigating a traffic fatality involving a vehicle and moped that occurred on Monday, September 30, 2019, in the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue and Malcolm X Avenue, Southeast. At approximately 7:55 pm, a gold in color 2006 Nissan Murano SUV was traveling southbound in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue, Southeast. The Nissan Murano approached the intersection of Malcolm X Avenue, Southeast, and proceeded to make a left turn onto the 600 block Malcolm X Avenue, Southeast. As the vehicle was turning, it was struck by a red and black in color “Tao-Tao” VIP Future Champion moped, which was traveling straight in the opposite direction, northbound on Martin Luther King Jr Ave, Southeast. The impact caused the operator of the Tao-Tao moped to be ejected. DC Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded to the scene and transported the operator of the moped to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The decedent has been identified as 19 year-old Jawan Evans, of Southeast, DC.
