AFFIDAVIT OF PROBABLE CAUSE

Comes now Affiant, and being duly sworn upon oath, deposes and states that Affiant is a law
enforcement officer in Tippecanoe County, State of Indiana, and in said capacity is familiar with the
reports of Sheriff Goldsmith and Lt. Huber 0f the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department, stating
affirmatively that on September 15, 2014 Sheriff Goldsmith (then Det. Goldsmith) spoke with Natalia
Barnett. Natalia said she was originally from the Ukraine but came to the United States in 2008
through an adoption. Natalia said she was adopted in 2010 by Michael Barnett and Kristine Barnett.
Natalia advised she had a form of dwarfism called spondyloepiphyseal. Natalia advised after bein
adopted by Michael Barnett and Kristine Barnett she lived in Hamilton County, State of Indiana wit
the Barnetts for approximately two years. Natalia said Michael Barnett and Kristine Barnett left
Natalia an apartment on N. 1 1th Street in Lafayette, Indiana. Natalia said she was left alone in the
apartment in Lafayette while the rest of the Barnett family moved to Canada. Natalia said she had
not seen the Barnetts since they moved t0 Canada.
This Affiant is familiar with Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital records which show on June 3, 2010
Natalia was examined by Dr. Riggs. Dr. Riggs estimated Natalia’s age to be approximately eight [8)
years old. Said medical records also show in June 0f 2012 Natalia had a skeletal survey completed at
Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital which estimated Natalia’s age to be approximately eleven (1 1)
years old. Affiant believes said records t0 be credible and reliable as they are kept in the ordinary
course ofbusiness.

On September 5, 2019 this Affiant spoke with Michael Barnett.

Michael Barnett admitted Michael
Barnett and Kristine Barnett adopted Natalia in November of 2010. Michael Barnett admitted the
Barnetts had Natalia’s age legally changed from eight (8) years old to twenty-two (22) years old in
June of 2012. Michael Barnett admitted Kristine Barnett told Natalia t0 tell others Natalia looks young
but was actually twenty-two [22). Michael Barnett admitted Michael Barnett and Kristine Barnett
rented an apartment for Natalia in Lafayette, Indiana in July of 2013. Michael admitted other than
paying for rent, Michael and Kristine Barnett did not financially support Natalia after leaving Natalia
at the apartment in Lafayette. Michael Barnett admitted after getting Natalia an apartment, Michael
Barnett and Kristine Barnett moved to Canada. Michael Barnett admitted Michael Barnett and
Kristine Barnett were aware doctors at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital determined Natalia was
a minor child in 2012. Michael Barnett admitted he believed Natalia was a minor child in Iuly 0f 2013
when Michael Barnett and Kristine Barnett left Natalia at an apartment in Lafayette.
This Affiant is aware in February 2016 Natalia moved out of the Tippecanoe County area. The State
alleges Michael Barnett and Kristine Barnett committed the charged offenses as a continuous act
from July 10, 2013 to February 28, 2016.
Affiant believes Sheriff Goldsmith and Lt. Huber to be reliable and credible as
capacity as a law enforcement officer in Tippecanoe County, State of Indiana.
