Pedersen Assistant Commissioner Site Remediation Waste Management Program New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection Dear Mr. Pedersen: Thank you for your letter of April 8, 2019. We agree that sampling for emerging contaminants at all National Priorities List (N PL) sites in New Jersey is a priority. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been evaluating NPL sites for emerging contaminants for. some time now and will continue to do, so in consideration of the recommendations provided in your letter. As you know, EPA has developed a Per- and Poly?uoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Action Plan and has identi?ed Superfund Sites, some at the recommendation of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (N DEP) with the potential for PFAS contamination for further evaluation and sampling. During the ?ve~year review process, we have evaluated sampling results and/or the need to sample for 1,4-dioxane and will continue to evaluate the appropriateness of this sampling going forward, along with sampling for PFAS, 1,2,3-trichloropropane and perchlorate. Our goal is to systematically review the sites that are not already in the ?ve-year reyiew process to ensure that sampling for emerging contaminants takes place when appropriate. We look forward to sharing. the results of this sampling as they become available. Please let me know if you would like to discuss this matter further. I can be reached at 212-637-4447.
