Answers to Candidate Questions 1. Three years ago I ran for this seat because I wanted to use my business and life experiences to help Clovis Unified maintain its high level of achievement. Three years later, I still feel that way. Clovis Unified has equipped my children with a high-quality education overthe years and I am now in a position to give back and provide the same service and support for the children that are currently attending Clovis Unified by serving on the CUSD Governing Board. 2. My wife and I have two sons, Derek and Blake. Both of our children attended CUSD since kindergarten. Derek graduated from Clovis North this year and Blake is currently a sophomore in the special education program at Clovis North. 3. I have never served on a school board, however, I did run for this seat in 2016. I have been involved over the years with my children's school activities. Over the years I have been involved in many community activities. I currently serve as a Board Member of the Clovis Kiwanis Club. In that ca pacity I help to set the direction and community involvement of the club. Kiwanis allows me to be involved in many different types of activities. Everything the Kiwanis does is geared towards kids. Clovis Kiwanis has a scholarship program that awards one student from each CUSD high school with a scholarship and I have served on the committee that awards the scholarships. I have been on the Clovis Kiwanis Freedom Fest Fireworks show committee for the last three years working on event planning and fundraising. My family hasalso participated in the "Giving Tree" atFancherCreek Elementary School. The "Giving Tree" is a Christmas tree that has student's names and their gift wishes as well as their clothing size. We shopped for items to fulfill the child's wish and needs and wrapped them so they would have gift to unwrap at Christmas. My company also participated in a coat drive forthe students at FancherCreek. For the last three years I have read books to my sister's kindergarten and first grade classes when she taught atFancherCreek. She currently teaches at Cedarwood Elementary. I also serve as an Ex -Officio Memberof the Fresno County Republican Party, representing Congressman Tom McClintock. I have held that capacity forthe past two years. 5. The basic purpose of any school district is to provide forthe education needs of a 11 students within its district, equipping the next generation to be productive and engaged citizens for their community. 6. The Governing Board is responsible for setting policies and procedures that conform with the values and beliefs of the community they serve. The board also employs the Superintendent and sets policy for hiring of other employees. Adoption of curriculum, budgeting, oversight of facilities, and adoption of collective bargaining agreements are all critical pieces oflhe scope ofthe board's duties. As a memberof the Board,! would work with fellow Trustees and the Superintendent to guide Clovis Unified's continued growth by developing policies that will ensure the district's long-term educationaland financial strength moving forward, while also building and maintaininga strongrapport with parents from across the district. 7. As a board memberl would use my years of business experience to assist the Board and Superintendent with maintaining the rigorous standards that have led Clovis Unified to decadesofhigh achievement by our students and graduates while continuingto strengthen the ties our school district has with the community at-large. 8.
