CANDIDATE QUESTIONNAIRE Ryan O. Walker 713 Kaweah Ave 1 . Why do you want to be a member of the Governing Board of the Clovis Unified School District? To be a representative for my area that can clearly and calmly relay concerns and suggestions to the rest of the board and district supervisors. To make sure the school district is continuing the path for a 5, 10, and 30-year plan that improves the education value and employment opportunities for graduates while maintaining sensible budget objectives. 2. Do you have children who previously attended or are currently attending schools within Clovis Unified School District? I currently have two children attending Cedarwood Elementary school and expect to have a third attending in 3 years. 3. Do you have experience serving on a school district governing board or school committees or participating in any school activities in Fresno County, California? Please list such prior experience, including the name of each organization, your role and functions, and the period in which you served or participated in such board, committees or school activities. I have not served on any committees within the school district though I have participated in the governing and implementing of the Clovis Youth Soccer League. It is outside the governance of the district, as it is sponsored in facilities management only, but it has given me ample opportunity to connect with people in the community that view Clovis as a way of life. 4. Describe any other community or business activities in which you have participated recently within Fresno County. Describe your role and functions, the period in which you served or participated in such activities. Please also indicate whether your work was volunteer or employment-related. We host the MFG Day for secondary schools in Fresno County. As my company's project manager, I give a tour of our facility and explain to students the role of a manufacturer in today's world. Relating business and manufacturing to teenagers may feel daunting at first but most kids are much more mature than their clothes or haircuts would lead you to believe. They get the basic concepts of how the economy works and you can see it when you explain the how/why of a machine process and that flash of engagement lights up in their eyes The MFG Day is strictly a volunteer participation program, both for companies and employees. 5. What do you see as the basic purposes of the public schools of Clovis Unified School District? Preparation for life. Whether that life involves continuing education or entry to the workforce, a public school education must prepare students for entering the public. Each student will exit at different levels of intelligence with different goals laid before them. What level that young adult reaches is up to his/her own natural ability and drive. In the end, ideally, a student should leave school as an adult: capable to make it on their own if that is the hand dealt to them. If there are teachers or administrators that would volunteer, initially at first to pilot, to be an after public school source as mentor/sounding board to assist those students on their own, that would be all the better. In my time at college, I appreciated the on-campus professors that were available at times after hours for support. 6. What is the role of the Clovis Unified School District Governing Board in the fulfillment of the purposes that you have stated in response to the previous question? The Board should be in place to voice and enact the community's will. Should the community wish initiatives to be enacted or goals to be met, the 7-member Board should work with the administration to make sure said will is achieved. This includes making fiduciary decisions and assisting with hiring/promoting the best people in key positions to guide the district to the desired outcome. 7. Describe what your role would be as a Board member on the Clovis Unified School District Governing Board. As well as being a representative to the administration for my community, as stated above, I would seek out ways to be involved in the technology and business vehicles within the district. I am also interested in making sure the arts and athletics are adequately funded and represented. As important as general education is, students need to be able to express themselves; find out who they are in the world. Some parents cannot afford to pay for those extracurricular activities on their own and I worry if those students lose that opportunity, what may become of them? 8. Do you have any relatives who are currently employed with Clovis Unified School District? If yes, please explain. No. 9. Since turning 18 years of age, have you ever been convicted or pled guilty or no contest to a felony? If yes, please explain. No. 10. Would you agree to voluntarily submit to a criminal background check, including fingerprinting? Yes. My fingerprints may still be on file as, in my early twenties, I was a seasonal employee in some of your summer programs. 11. If you are appointed to the Governing Board, would you uphold the laws of the State of California? Yes; insofar that said laws would not indemnify me against laws of the United States that supersede the laws of California.
