Dear South River High School Families:
I am writing to let you know about an incident that occurred at our school today so that you can have accurate
information and can discuss this matter with your child in a manner you deem most appropriate.
At about 9:45 this morning, a teacher alerted our administration to the presence of a swastika that had been drawn
on a wall of the boys bathroom located near our media center. Administrators and our School Resource Officer
immediately responded to the bathroom. The image was documented and then removed.
We are in the process of investigating this matter to determine, if we can, who is responsible for this act of hate.
The image did not exist last night when custodial crews conducted their evening cleaning, and the bathroom
remained locked from that point until this morning. We believe it was done this morning during or after student
arrival.
I want to be very clear that this type of behavior is unacceptable. Swastikas are very clear symbols of hate and have
historically, though not exclusively, been directed toward the Jewish community. Our school system has a clear
policy to address bias-motivated behavior and the consequences for violating our polices are stipulated in our
Student Handbook. I assure you that we will take swift and appropriate action with regard to any student who is
found to be involved in this matter.
As we continue to investigate this matter, I ask you to please speak with your child about the importance of
acceptance and inclusion, and the obligation every one of us has to simply be kind to each other. Please also
relay any pertinent information regarding this or any other matter to our school or police as soon as possible.
Please know that our school counselors, as well as the AACPS Office of Student Services, are always available
to speak with students and staff about their feelings and concerns regarding the climate of our school. Any safety
concern can also be addressed through the Student Safety Hotline at 1-877-676-9854 that can be accessed 24
hours a day, 7 days a week.
I wanted to make sure you were aware of this incident so that you can support your child in the way or ways that
you deem most appropriate. Please know that our school counselors are always available for students, especially if
your child needs to share how he/she feels about this or any other incident.

Queridas familias de la escuela secundaria de South River:
Les escribo para informarles sobre un incidente que ocurrió en nuestra escuela hoy para que pueda tener
información precisa y pueda discutir este asunto con su hijo/a de la manera que considere más apropiada
A eso de las 9:45 esta mañana, un profesor alertó a nuestra administración de la presencia de una esvástica que
había sido dibujada en una pared del baño de niños ubicada cerca de nuestra biblioteca. Administradores y nuestro
Oficial de Recursos Escolares respondieron inmediatamente al baño. La imagen se documentó y luego se borró.
Estamos investigando este asunto para determinar, si podemos, quién es responsable de este acto de odio. La
imagen no estaba ahí anoche cuando el personal de limpieza llevo a cabo su limpieza nocturna, y el baño
permaneció cerrado desde ese punto hasta esta mañana. Creemos que eso se hizo esta mañana durante o después de
haber llegado los estudiantes.
Quiero ser muy claro que este tipo de comportamiento es inaceptable. Las esvásticas son símbolos muy claros del
odio e históricamente, aunque no exclusivamente, se han dirigido hacia la comunidad judía. Nuestro sistema escolar
tiene una política clara para abordar el comportamiento motivado por sesgos y las consecuencias de violar nuestras
policías están estipuladas en nuestro Manual para Estudiantes. Le aseguro que tomaremos medidas rápidas y
apropiadas con respecto a cualquier estudiante que se encuentre involucrado en este asunto.
A medida que continuamos investigando este asunto, le pido que hable con su hijo/a acerca de la importancia de
la aceptación y la inclusión, y la obligación que cada uno de nosotros tiene de ser simplemente amable el uno
con el otro. Por favor, también comunique cualquier información pertinente con respecto a este o cualquier otro
asunto a nuestra escuela o policía tan pronto como sea posible. Por favor, sepa que nuestros consejeros escolares,
así como la Oficina de Servicios Estudiantiles de AACPS, siempre están disponibles para hablar con los
estudiantes y el personal sobre sus sentimientos e inquietudes con respecto al clima de nuestra escuela. Cualquier
problema de seguridad también se puede abordar a través de la Línea Directa de Seguridad Estudiantil al 1-877676-9854 a la que se puede acceder las 24 horas del día, los 7 días de la semana.
Quería asegurarme de que estuvieran al tanto de este incidente para que puedan apoyar a su hijo/a de la manera o
