Friends, After the primary election in August, Danny Westneat claimed that this isn’t a change election cycle. And today, he’s asserting that, in the general election, voters will be more concerned about Amazon than the City Council. He was wrong then and he’s wrong now. This election is about voters choosing between change or more of the same. It’s about voters choosing between solutions to our community challenges or more ideological rhetoric that divides us. In December, our polling showed that 49% of voters disapproved of the Council’s job performance and 56% of voters didn’t trust the City Council. The latest poll from Crosscut/Elway shows that 69% of voters in this general election have a negative view of the City Council’s job performance. Voters want change. They are tired and upset about the lack of progress and accountability on homelessness, traffic, public safety, and neighborhood issues. Our city government needs to get the basics right and be responsive to citizen concerns. Instead, this council has broken trust with voters and failed to make meaningful progress on too many critical issues. Don’t let anyone fool you about this election – it will be a vote on change versus the status quo. The people who should be concerned about backlash this election are those who stand with the status quo.
