Holiday Crime Initiative Public Safety Committee November 12, 2019 Lonzo Anderson Assistant Chief of Police Dallas Police Department Presentation Overview • • • • • • Background Purpose Operational Plan Personnel Community Engagement Holiday Safety Tips 2 Public Safety Committee Background • Each year during the holiday season, we anticipate an increase in select crimes occurring within our entertainment and shopping areas. • The mission of the Holiday Crime Initiative is to prevent crime in areas that are frequented by residents during the holiday season. 3 Public Safety Committee Purpose • The Holiday Crime Initiative will focus on reducing property and violent crime during the holiday season within targeted entertainment and shopping areas. • Officers will focus on the identified target areas to reduce individual robberies, business robberies, thefts, burglary of motor vehicles and unauthorized use of motor vehicles. 4 Public Safety Committee Patrol Bureau - Operational Plan • The Holiday Crime Initiative operational plan is effective October 30, 2019 – December 31, 2019. • Historically targeted locations include: Shopping Malls Retail Districts Entertainment Districts Residential Neighborhoods 5 Public Safety Committee Patrol Bureau - Operational Plan • Monitor crime trends and patterns. • Create data focused plans for each watch. • Increase patrols at all business corridors. • Neighborhood patrol officers will assist with patrols. • Collaborate with auto-theft, gang unit, narcotics, VICE and other investigative units. 6 Public Safety Committee Patrol Bureau - Operational Plan • Patrol investigative units will coordinate with the Public Information Office to put out information to the media. • Neighborhood officers will continue to work with community groups and use social media to send out holiday safety tips. 7 Public Safety Committee Personnel • One key objective of the operation is to provide a highly visible uniformed presence. The following units will be utilized to meet this goal. Bicycle Officers Mounted Officers Tactical Officers Reserve Officers Helicopter Unit Covert Deployment Officers Volunteers in Patrol (VIPs) Sky Tower Bait Vehicles 8 Public Safety Committee Personnel • Due to patrol staffing levels, additional compensatory time or overtime has been budgeted to avoid a negative impact on on-duty officers. • By creating the compensatory and overtime, the impacted patrol divisions can continue to focus on current crime trends. 9 Public Safety Committee Community Engagement • Central Patrol Division • Northeast Patrol Division • Southeast Patrol Division • Southwest Patrol Division • Northwest Patrol Division • North Central Patrol Division • South Central Patrol Division 10 Public Safety Committee Holiday Safety Tips Keep all car doors locked and windows closed while in or out of your car. Set your alarm or use an anti-theft device. If you must shop at night, park in a well-lighted area. Avoid parking next to vans, trucks with camper shells, or cars with tinted windows. Park as close as you can to your destination and take notice of where you parked. Never leave your car unoccupied with the motor running or with children inside. Do not leave packages or valuables on the seat of your car. This creates a temptation for thieves. If you must leave something in the car, lock it in the trunk or put it out of sight. There is added security in numbers. Keep a secure hold on your purse, handbag and parcels. Do not put them down or on top of the car in order to open the door. When approaching or leaving your vehicle, be aware of your surroundings. Do not approach your car alone if there are suspicious people in the area.
