FREDERICK N. GLEATON Atlanta (Sandy Springs), Georgia 30328 __________________________________________________________________ Governor Kemp: This is my application to fill the seat of Senator Isakson, pending the special election in November 2020. I have no interest in running for re-election if appointed but would welcome this unique opportunity to serve my state in this limited period. The first members of my family to settle in Georgia were German immigrants who settled in Effingham County in 1745. I am, therefore, a dedicated tenth-generation Georgian. I grew up on a farm in Southwest Georgia and I attended the public schools in Crisp County. In the spring of 1969, after my junior year in high school, I was granted early admission to the University of Georgia at the age of 16. I graduated in 1973, magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, and Phi Kappa Phi, with a major in Political Science. Three years later, I was granted my law degree from the University of Virginia, where I was a member of the Editorial Board of the Virginia Journal of International Law. I was, at the time of my admission, one of the youngest members of the State Bar of Georgia. As of this date, I have been a member of the State Bar of Georgia for over 43 years. At the age of 66, I have recently taken senior status from the firm of Owen, Gleaton, Egan, Jones & Sweeney, LLP, which I helped form in 2000. The bulk of my years in practice have been in civil litigation, primarily defense trial work. I have been lead counsel in cases pending in 60 of the states’ 159 counties and I have tried approaching 100 cases to jury verdicts in this time. My wife, of 44 years, Susanne, and I have raised three children of whom we are quite proud. My oldest daughter, her husband, and three kids, live in Fort Worth, Texas, where he is a civil engineer with the Corps of Engineers. My second daughter is Director of Student Activities (among other titles) at Marist School, She, her husband, and two children live in Sandy Springs. My son, a VP at Atlantic Capital Bank, and his wife, also live in Sandy Springs. As you may infer, we are a close family. My two sisters and their families live in Covington and Peachtree City. During my law career I have been selected as a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. I was one of the first ten lawyers in Georgia to earn certification by the American Board of Professional Liability Attorneys. I have been designated as a “Georgia Super Lawyer” in each year since 2007, and to “Best Lawyers in America” every year since 2011. In recognition of the number of jury trials completed, I have obtained “Advocate” status in the American Board of Trial Advocates. In 43 years, I have not been the subject of a single complaint to the State Bar of Georgia. My current status as “Of Counsel” to my firm requires no specific duties of me and I am ready, willing, and able to serve the remainder of Senator Isakson’s term. I believe I am qualified and will appreciate your consideration. Yours truly, Frederick N. Gleaton
