PLANTS is a group that focuses on horticulture. not veganism or animal rights. ECO deals with environmentalism and sustainability, but is not active in animal welfare. The Wildlife Association has an interest in wild animals, but not in farmed or domesticated ones. How will the chartering of this organization contribute to the mission of Truman State University and how will the campus community and student members benefit from its existence? (Visit abouttruman.edulmission.asp to read the university mission) Truman"s mission is to develop passionate students, and unlock their potenm'?imq liberal arts education. There are incredibly passionate students looking to be the voice for th_e__apima St - DR seeking a liberal arts education can find value in collaborating with like-minded students (if they are vegan or ()wa supportive), or they can find value in engaging with ideas they might not have considered otherwise (if they are unfamiliar with veganism/animal rights]. By being able to reserve rooms/outdoor/table Space, the club can host educat' nal events to interact with other students. Explain why Truman students would want to join the potential organization. The truman community has a significant population of vegan/vegetarian/interested students. According to Sodexo, approximately 5% of campusv regularly choses the vegan Options in the dining halls. wWway for students to meetup with like/WAD minded individuals. This appealing because vegan/vegetarian students face unique struggles (navigating dining hall taunting, etc). It allows gives students a platform on campus to advocate for animals. w/o Unto 112 10(1372019 Results to ow ,0 mi at? The Truman State Animal Alliance's three main goals are: 1. identify vegan/vegetarian/curious students and serve as a social support and advocacy group 2. Educate other students about the vegan lifestyle and issues concerning animal rights/plant-based eating 3. Mobilize in support of goals/causes relating to animal advocacy. Describe how this organization differs from other chartered organizations on campus. There is no other group that promotes animal advocacy on Truman's campus. PLANTS is a group that focuses on horticulture, not veganism or animal rights. ECO deals with environmentalism and sustainability, but is not active in animal welfare. The Wildlife Association has an interest in wild animals, but not in farmed or domesticated ones. How will the chartering of this organization contribute to the mission of Truman State University and how will the campus community and student members bene?t from its existence? (Visit about.truman.edu/mission.asp_ to read the university mission) Truman's mission is to develop passionate students, and unlock their potential with a liberal arts education. There are incredibly passionate students looking to be the voice for the animals. Students seeking a liberal arts education can find value in collaborating with like-minded students (if they are vegan or supportive), or they can ?nd value in engaging with ideas they might not have considered otherwise (if they are unfamiliar with veganisrn/animal rights). By being able to reserve rooms/outdoor/table space, the club can host educational events to interact with other students. Explain why Truman students would want to join the potential organization. The truman community has a signi?cant population of vegan/vegetarian/interested students. According to 113 12122019 Fwd: New Student Organization Sodexo, approximately 5% of campus regularly chose the vegan options in the dining halls. This organization is a way for students to meetup with like-minded individuals. This appealing because vegan/vegetarian students face unique struggles (navigating dining halls, taunting, etc). It allows gives students a platform on campus to advocate for animals. If chartered, how will you ensure that this organization will exist and thrive long after your graduation? Several of the current executive board members (including the president) are freshman. Not only will we actively recruit new members at each activity fair, we host additional tables and activities to draw in new members. Our rules allow for a large executive board, so every interested student can be given a role and gain leadership skills. Have you considered and planned for the ?ve types of risk (physical, emotional, ?nancial, reputational, facility) that the potential organization would encounter or create? If so, please describe your plan. i Physical risks: - For events with especially controversial topics, or expecting large turnout of students (over 50), the club's risk manager will contact DPS before the event to coordinate - For events with food, we will require proper labeling and food safety instructions to ensure everyone is safe from food allergies Emotional - Advocating with animals can be emotionally dif?cult. Individuals should not have to face these issues alone which is Why our meetings will be a safe place students can come for support Financial - The club will appoint a fundraising chair to raise ?nances - The club will seek support from aligned non-pro?t groups that deal with social advocacy Reputational - Members looking to represent the animal alliance at events will undergo training from the exec board on how to effectively and respectfully communicate ideas and deal with potentially hostile students - Social media access will be restricted to the club president and a designated social media director - Members that are causing disruptions to meetings/events may be given a warning/asked to leave by a senior member of the organization. Members may be banned from club activities if 2/3 of the executive board deem it necessary for the safety/reputation/?mctioning of the club. Facility - The president will contact the and Physical plant for events on the quad to ensure no harm is done to the property - The members of the club will be responsible for restoring meeting rooms back to their original condition prior to meetings Will this organization he nationally af?liated? No If so, what are some national requirements that must be ful?lled? n/a Please describe this organization's frequency of travel Low Please provide a list of 10 potential student members (Name, Truman Username, and Telephone Number of each). Who is this president of the organization and will this person be the primary contact for the group? Astha Thapa is the president, at1618@truman.edu, she will be the primary contact . How does the organization plan to include those who are pro-animal rights but still choose to eat meat? Part of the mission of our group is outreach and education. Those with open minds whoo eat meat are welcome to come to meetings and events. In fact, many events such as documentary screenings, tablings, etc will target meat eaters. - Could you elaborate on how the group plans to ?mobilize? in support of their goals? What has this training looked like? Groups such as PETA do online activism on social media, and our members can download the app to participate in campaigns. Groups such as the Humane League also have nation-wide events (ie McDonalds protests) that vegan student groups are encouraged to participate in. We also plan to work with - Has your organization considered being nationally af?liated with Our group gets resources and training from PETA, however there is no of?cial process to become an af?liated student group with PETA. . Could you elaborate on which speci?c non-pro?t groups that deal with social advocacy would help ?nancially support this organization? As mentioned above, PETA provides resources to our organization - we are able to request grants from them. The Humane Society also provides training and coaching to student leaders in our group. . In your application you mentioned that if a member is causing a disruption, they may be warned/asked to leave by a senior member of the organization. Could you de?ne senior member? A senior member is either A. a member of the executive board or B. A member who has been an active member of the organization for 4 or more consecutive semesters. . How does the organization plan to address the emotional risk of having a police presence at events and how that could potentially escalate a situation? Has the organization considered other ways to address these scenarios? DPS is not the preferred response (ideally nothing would escalate to that level). - Could you elaborate on the training members will undergo to address potentially hostile students? Also key is to record any interactions for legal purposes, should it come to that. . You acknowledge the emotional risk of this subject matter but what is your plan to address it? .. 1M 1212201 9 Re: Animal Alliance Application - The emotional risk will exist whether we are recognized or not. Our meetings can serve as a safe space for students to express their feelings and experiences. ELEM Ray Stewart Organizational Development Team Lead Union and Involvement Services Truman State University 100 E. Normal Avenue Kirksville, MO 63501 rls4746@trurman.edu Pursue. Alpha Psi Omega Describe this organization's of?cial purpose/mission and goals. As an honorary theatrical society, recognizing excellence and hard work in theatre, our goals are not only to showcase and highlight the leaders of the Truman Theatre Department, but also to help foster a more professional level of theatre at Truman State University, through events done with our organization and funds we raise, given back to the Theatre Department. Describe how this organization differs from other chartered organizations on campus. Alpha Psi Omega differs from other organizations because it is focused exclusively on the work of the best and most dedicated students in the theatre department and strives to recognize the art and hard work that its students create. We are different from other organizations, like IPAC, because only students who work in the theatre department can join and the members must be invited to join based off of merit and involvement, it is not open to the public. How will the chartering of this organization contribute to the mission of Truman State University and how will the campus community and student members benefit from its existence? Alpha Psi Omega is a nationally recognized honorary theatrical society, so having this organization be charted on campus would help Truman maintain its high ranking as a prolific university. This organization's goal is to highlight the best work of our theatre department, so chartering Alpha Psi Omega would also bring more recognition to Truman and our theatre program. Explain why Truman students would want to join the potential organization. Since Alpha Psi Omega is a nationally recognized organization. it demonstrates the high quality of work that our undergraduate students create and helps future employers understand their exceptional education and personal dedication to the field. if chartered, how will you ensure that this organization will exist and thrive long after your graduation? Every semester the organization will invite more exceptional students to join and be inducted at the end of the semester. The majority of the theatre faculty are also members of Alpha Psi Omega, so these two factors will help ensure the organization's growth. Also, after every event the Truman Theatre Department completes, we, the executive board and our faculty mentors, will evaluate the work that the students completed on the shows (based off of feedback from the faculty directors and managers) and when the students reach a certain level of pre-established points, we will nominate them to join. Have you considered and planned for the ?ve types of risk (physical, emotional, financial, reputational, facility) that the potential organization would encounter or create? If so, please describe your plan. Financial Sustainability- We plan to fundraise for our organization through things such as bake sales, but also doing events that we charge admission for. We are also open to charging dues. We plan most events to be on campus. Risk Management- We will have a meeting with our executive board and faculty advisers before every event to talk through all five sections of risk management and evaluate if we can do the events while maintaining our safety and comfort. Facility Usage- In the theatre department, we are trained to respect the spaces we are working in. and we will be holding our members to the same level of accountability that the theatre department does. Also many members of our organization will be people who have acted in a management role in our theatre department and while doing this job they are required to troubleshoot and problem solve most problems that would fall under risk management. Will this organization be nationally af?liated? Yes If so, what are some national requirements that must be fulfilled? Truman's branch of Alpha Psi Omega was once chartered at the university level, so the members of the organization chartered it nationally at that time. The organization?s members did not realize all of the steps to maintain university recognition, but have maintained their relationship with the national organization. We are seeking to recharter the organization at the university level. The national requirements are that members must be invited to join once they have demonstrated above average dedication to the craft, and there is an induction period followed by an induction ceremony. The organization also insists that its members must be students in good standing with the university and they have to be good citizens of the university and community. Please describe this organization's frequency of travel? Moderate Neurodiverqent Student Network Describe this organization's of?cial purposelmission and goals. The purpose of the neurodivergent student network is three-fold, also known as the three E's. A Empower- gather together members of the neurodivergent community to discuss relevant issues both on and off campus as well as hosting social events and serving/helping neurodivergent students everywhereA Educate- host outreach events and educate the public on neurodiversity issues as well as answering questions the neurotypical community may have? Embrace- create a narrative through words and actions that neurodivergent people are different and valuable. as well as a culture that promotes inclusion and celebrating our differencesA Describe how this organization differs from other chartered organizations on campus. To my knowledge there are no other neurodivergent related organizations on campus. How will the chartering of this organization contribute to the mission of Truman State University and how will the campus community and student members bene?t from its existence? The club will hopefully promote a community where diversity is not only accepted, but celebrated. Explain why Truman students would want to join the potential organization. There are several neurodivergent students on campus who would potentially like to connect to each other, in addition, there are many neurotypical students interested in learning about neurodivergent issues. If chartered, how will you ensure that this organization will exist and thrive long after your graduation? There will always be neurodivergent students on campus, and with a more accepting society. there are only more to come. Have you considered and planned for the ?ve types of risk (physical, emotional, financial, reputational, facility) that the potential organization would encounter or create? If so, please describe your plan. Yes, mainly emotional and reputational. An executive board of five members allows for a well- rounded committee to plan and decide things. Will this organization be nationally af?liated? No If so, what are some national requirements that must be ful?lled? Me Please describe this organization's frequency of travel? None this year, potentially one trip a year in the future but we are not there yet. Pre-Genetics Club Describe this organization's of?cial purpose/mission and goals. The pre-Genetic Counseling club will help Truman students who are pursuing a career in genetic counseling understand the career, what to do as an undergrad to prepare them for graduate school, and the graduate school application process. In addition to this, the club would raise awareness of the field of genetic counseling, and help other students find their passion for genetic counseling. The group would provide a social circle of those interested in a similar career. as well. Discussions regarding ethical aspects of the career would also be had regularly. Throughout meetings, skills important to the career of genetic counseling would be practiced, such as reading pedigrees, interpersonal communication skills, and knowledge of specific genetic diseases. Describe how this organization differs from other chartered organizations on campus. There are other pre-professional organizations on campus, but none of them are specific to genetic counseling. Genetic counseling is an exciting, upcoming field that combines genetics with It has different prerequisites and graduate school application process than other professions, and a club could help students navigate these specific differences. How will the chartering of this organization contribute to the mission of Truman State University and how will the campus community and student members bene?t from its existence? This club would prepare students for a career in an interdisciplinary field, as genetic counseling combines biology and Additionally, student members will have more con?dence in their ability to navigate the preparation and application to graduate school that is required for a career in genetic counselors. The application process can be very daunting and confusing, so having a club to help walk students through the process the whole four years of undergrad will be very beneficial. Explain why Truman students would want to join the potential organization. It is difficult to know exactly what to do to prepare for genetic counseling graduate school just by doing it alone. This club would provide students a community of other students who are going through the exact same process. It would ensure that their resume is best suited to graduate school, and it would help guide them through applying to provide them with the best chance of getting into a graduate school. They would also enjoy meetings when we talk about topics within the field of genetic counseling rather than the specific application process. If chartered, how will you ensure that this organization will exist and thrive long after your graduation? We have already been having unofficial meetings of the organization, and we have people interested from every grade level. This will confirm that there will be people to run the club. This career-is growing incredibly rapidly, so more than likely each year there will be more and more people coming in who are interested in pursuing genetic counseling, and they will want to join the club. Have you considered and planned for the ?ve types of risk (physical, emotional, financial, reputational, facility) that the potential organization would encounter or create? If so, please describe your plan. There is some emotional risk associated with the organization as we may discuss topics that are sensitive to certain people. We would do everything possible to warn people of the topics for each meeting, so students can make an informed decision whether to come. Additionally, we will be as kind as possible during our discussions so as to not offend anyone. We will have a treasurer who can be aware of financial risk with the club, but this risk should be limited because we will not be spending much money on our meetings. All of the other kinds of risk should be very limited, as we will mostly be holding meetings that involve discussions and presentations. Will this organization be nationally affiliated? No If so, what are some national requirements that must be fulfilled? The club will not be nationally affiliated Please describe this organization's frequency of travel Very low to none TruSisters Describe this organization's of?cial purpose/mission and goals. The mission of TruSisters is to provide a space for women of color on Truman State University through sisterhood. This organization will promote self-esteem, self-love, empowerment and solidarity among the women. TruSisters will meet this criteria through intentional programming and consistent unconditional support. Describe how this organization differs from other chartered organizations on campus. TruSisters is specifically aimed and designed for women of color. This organization focuses on the experience of what it is like to be a woman of color on a predominantly white campus and develop solidarity and unconditional support among the women. in addition, there are not any women of color organizations currently on campus besides greek life. TruSisiters provide the opportunity for women who cannot afford/are not interested in greek life but still desire the sisterhood and connection to women of color. How will the chartering of this organization contribute to the mission of Truman State University and how will the campus community and student members benefit from its existence? Chartering TruSisters contributes to the mission of Truman State University because this will allow other students from similar studies to network on the campus both inside and outside of their professional studies. The campus will benefit from this organization because it is a need for the women of coior on this campus. TruSisters? The goal is to create a space for women of color to be heard and included on Truman's campus. The founder of the organization believes women are the backbone in most communities and once there is solidarity among the women, then change is bound to happen rather within the community or on the campus. Explain why Truman students would want to join the potential organization. Women would want to join this organization because of the gain of sisterhood among the women, the increase in self-love and appreciation and the space provided to meet their needs to thrive on a predominantly white campus. TruSisters will provide a safe place for women of color to be heard, understood and represented. If chartered, how will you ensure that this organization will exist and thrive long after your graduation? ln order to ensure the program would thrive after I graduate I would develop a 1-2 year plan for the organization. This plan will be developed with thee founder and the upcoming women to take over the organization. The 1-2 year plan will lay out the way the organization be operating from elections of the executive board, to developing and executing events and an ideal order in which meetings should run. The 1-2 year plan will serve as a guideline for the organization and can be recycled year after year with necessary edits to meet the need of the women. Finally, the founder of the organization will remain in contact with the executive board and offer any assistance she can with the maintenance of TruSisters. Have you considered and planned for the ?ve types of risk (physical, emotional, financial, reputational, facility) that the potential organization would encounter or create? If so, please describe your plan. Physical risk: Physical risk will be very minimal for the student members but if so the necessary there will be documents drawn out that will prevent both Truman and TruSisters from being held reliable for and physical harm done. Emotional risk: TruSisters will be provided documentation with campus partners and told of the emotional risk if any is presented. financial risk: TruSisters will fundraise for funding or apply for organizational grants facility risk: TruSisters will respect the space of the event held and not disrupt it in anyway. reputational risk: The women will be held accountable for their actions and they will know about the importance from gaining a negative reputation. The women of TruSisters will be avoid negative reputation through positive interactions among the campus. Will this organization be nationally affiliated? No If so, what are some national requirements that must be ful?lled? nla Please describe this organization's frequency of travel Traveling for this organization will be very minimal. Describe this organization's official purposelmission and goals. Truman's mission is to develop passionate students, and unlock their potential with a liberal arts education. There are incredibly passionate students looking to be the voice for the animals. Students seeking a liberal arts education can find value in collaborating with like-minded students (if they are vegan or supportive). or they can find value in engaging with ideas they might not have considered otherwise (if they are unfamiliar with veganism/animal rights). By being able to reserve rooms/outdoor/table space. the club can host educational events to interact with other students. Explain why Truman students would want to join the potential organization. The truman community has a significant population of vegan/vegetarian/interested students. According to Sodexo, approximately 5% of campus regularly chose 5 the vegan options in the dining halls. Physical risks: - For events with especially controversial topics, or expecting a large turnout of students (over 50), the club's risk manager will contact DPS before the event to coordinate - For events with food, we will require proper labeling and food safety instructions to ensure everyone is safe from food allergies Emotional - Advocating with animals can be emotionally difficult. Individuals should not have to face these issues alone which is why our meetings will be a safe place students can come for support Financial - The club will appoint a fundraising chair to raise finances - The club will seek support from aligned non-profit groups that deal with social advocacy Reputational - Members looking to represent the animal alliance at events will undergo training from the exec board on how to effectively and respectfully communicate ideas and deal with potentially hostile students - Social media access will be restricted to the club president and a designated social media director Members that are causing disruptions to meetings/events may be given a warning/asked to leave by a senior member of the organization. Members may be banned from club activities if 2/3 of the executive board deem it necessary for the safety/reputationlfunctioning of the club. Facility - The president will contact the and Physical plant for events on the quad to ensure no harm is done to the property - The members of the club will be responsible for restoring meeting rooms back to their original condition prior to meetings Will this organization be nationally af?liated? No If so, what are some national requirements that must be ful?lled? n/a Please describe this organization's frequency of travel. Low Wrestling Club Describe this organization's of?cial purpose/mission and goals. The purpose of this club is to allow students to get involved or stay involved in wrestling in college. This club does not require past wrestling experience. One of the goals of the club is to compete at open tournaments throughout the season and to go to wrestling club nationals at the end of the season. However, another goal of the club is to allow students with no past experience to learn the sport of wrestling. Club members are not required to compete at open tournaments but can just participate at practices to learn about the sport and have fun. Describe how this organization differs from other chartered organizations on campus. This club differs from other organizations on campus because there is currently no wrestling affiliated club on campus because the wrestling team was out last year. Since the wrestling team was out last year there are already several past collegiate wrestlers that are interested in starting this club. How will the chartering of this organization contribute to the mission of Truman State University and how will the campus community and student members bene?t from its existence? Student members will benefit from this cluba?Ts existence because they would have the opportunity to compete at open wrestling tournaments and to compete at wrestling club nationals. The club will also help students become more physically active and will allow them to meet new people who have similar interests as them. Truman state is a liberal arts college and is proud that its students are well rounded. This wrestling club will help students get involved in an activity other than academics and will help them become more well-rounded. Additionally, Truman is dedicated to providing opportunities for students to pursue their passions. Since the wrestling team was cut, this club team will allow past wrestlers to continue doing something they enjoy and will allow students that were not on the previous wrestling team to engage in a rewarding sport. Explain why Truman students would want to join the potential organization. Truman students would want to join wrestling club because it will give them the Opportunity to compete at open tournaments at the collegiate level. It would also give them an activity that they can destress and have a break from the rigorous academics at Truman State University. There are several different types of students that would want to join the wrestling club. First, there are the students that were on the wrestling team last year that want an avenue to continue wrestling. There are also several students that have talked to that said they wanted to get involved with wrestling, but not at the collegiate D2 level because it was too much of a time commitment and they didna?Tt have the skill level to compete at that level. Starting a wrestling club will allow these types of students to get involved in wrestling without it being the huge time commitment that a varsity sport is. The wrestling club will also attract beginners and people who have never wrestled before that are curious about the sport. If chartered, how will you ensure that this organization will exist and thrive long after your graduation? When the club is first started, we will have an executive board that will mainly consist of students who were on the wrestling team before it was out They will be able to start the club successfully and get students interested and involved because they are knowledgeable about wrestling and have dedicated a lot of time and energy into the sport. The founding executive board will teach and train the other members of the club to the best of their ability to ensure that the club will remain successful after they graduate. Have you considered and planned for the ?ve types of risk (physical, emotional, financial, reputational, facility) that the potential organization would encounter or create? If so, please describe your plan. For reputational risk management we will make sure that all students who compete at open tournaments will have good sportsmanship and be respectful to other schools at the tournament. if any wrestling member represents Truman state in a negative way, such as having bad sportsmanship, the executive board and the faculty advisor will have a meeting with the member to talk about their actions and any consequences that may come with. In order to maintain financial stability, we will fundraise on a larger scale by contacting wrestling alumni. Coach Schutter and the wrestling team last year was able to fundraise over $80,000 to have the wrestling team for another season. We will obviously not be needing this much money for a club team, but we can use the same strategy to raise money for the wrestling club. There are many alumni who are dedicated to keeping wrestling at Truman to some capacity, and Coach Schutter has maintained good relationships with the wrestling alumni. We will also do smaller fundraising projects like tabling on campus to raise money. The biggest expense for a wrestling club is a wrestling mat. Luckily, since we had a wrestling team last year, we still have a wrestling mat on campus that we can use. I already contacted the athletic director and he has confirmed that we can use the wrestling mat for the wrestling club. Initially, if students want to compete at the open tournaments, they may have to help pay some money for the cost of registration, hotel costs, and gas until we have enough money and a plan to pay for the costs. However, I anticipate that not all members of the club will compete in open tournaments. For physical risk management we will make sure that the members are safe while practicing. have been wrestling for most of my life, so I know the correct safe technique. I will make sure the members are using the correct technique and they are pared with a partner around the same weight to limit any risk for injury. I will also make sure the wrestling mat is taped correctly to prevent any injury. In the beginning of practice, we will also do a warmup that includes stretching to help decrease the risk for injury. For emotional risk management I will make sure to know each student??Ts experience with wrestling. We will make sure that we dona?Tt overwhelm students that are new to wrestling and we will teach them the basics of wrestling first. At open tournaments and competition, we will also make sure to encourage each wrestler and help support and coach them during their matches. For facility risk management we will make sure that we are taking proper care of the wrestling mats. Since some of the students that will be a part of the club were on the wrestling team last year, we have past experience of cleaning the mats properly, so we will make sure that the wrestling mats are properly cleaned and taken care of. The plan is to use the small in Pershing for practice. We can easily roll the mats up to the side of the and they will stay out of the other sports and cluba?Ts way. Pershing will also be a great place to meet because it is on campus, so it will be easy for students to get to. Will this organization he nationally af?liated? No If so, what are some national requirements that must be ful?lled? The organization will not be national af?liated. Please describe this organization's frequency of travel The members of the organization who want to compete will be traveling to around 4 or 5 open tournaments throughout the season and then possibly the national tournament at the end of the season. It is our goal to travel to Midwest tournaments that are fairly close by to reduce the cost of travel. Those dates have not been released yet but it is typically within the first few weeks ofthe spring semester and then again around March. As we continue to review our own processes to get an understanding ofthe organizations seeking recognition I would suggest that members ofthe Veggie Club explain, beyond seeking space and the ability to market, their signi?cance to the Truman community. During their hearing they speci?cally did talk about reserving kitchen space which was why we referenced it in our denial response. I believe that we struggled with their impact beyond meeting up with one another which does not require a charter. Iftheir signi?cance/impact is a direct result ofa recognized student organization that is something different and was not what was presented to us. I understand the frustration as result ofthe denial - with each round ofhearings we hold I am personally reviewing our process and educating our staff about what recognition means to students and how we evaluate "impact?. They want to be able to reserve rooms for meetings. They need space to get together, share ideas, and plan events. They only ask for the privileges awarded to every other chartered student organization on our campus. Acknowledge this organization because it provides support for young people who are often alienated by the dominant culture. Meat eating is considered normal in the US, especially in rural Missouri. Veggie Club provides fellowship, a place where kids can af?rm each other, a space to feel OK. Surely Truman can support that! I am aware that this is the second rejection these kids have received. The speci?c areas of concern which ultimately shaped our decision are as follows: . The Center for Student Involvement is unable to reserve the facilities necessary for the activities the organization is planning to hold. One of the primary activities the group discussed that the organization would be performing is cooking vegetarian/vegan meals together. The of?ce is unable to reserve the kitchen spaces used on campus, such as in the residence halls, as their primary purpose is to serve the students living in those spaces. . Veggie Club is able to perform the activities discussed without the Center for Student Involvement's resources. As mentioned previously, the of?ce is unable to reserve cooking spaces on campus. Likewise, grocery shopping as a group would be performed as an off-campus event. After careful deliberation the Organization Development Team has concluded that the proposed new student organization, Veggie Club, does not fully meet the chartering requirements outlined by the Center for Student Involvement. The speci?c areas of concern which ultimately shaped our decision are as follows: . The Center for Student Involvement is unable to reserve the facilities necessary for the activities the organization is planning hold. Ultimately, we feel the of?ce?s resources are not necessary to support the activities suggested in the hearing. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Organizational Development?s Staff Advisor, Damon Pee at (660) 785-4222 or at damonpu?ltrumanedu. Thank you very much for your interest in chartering a new group! Concerns/Questions for Organizations ARM: Concerned about the sustainability of the organization. i don't know how many members they think they could have. Also, mixing all these different religions (they listed 4) could cause issues within the organization. Most organizations focus on one specific religion and I could see there being problems if the group represented 4+ religions. Also, I'm not exactly sure what their meetings are going to be about. if it's the discussion of different religions then i could see some members not attending some meetings because it'll cover a religion they do not prescribe to Campus Outreach: It says to help Christians grow their relationship with God and help the community but then they go on to say that it's to build friendships for people of any religion. Almost all religious organizations focus on people as a whole, not just members spiritually. How are all the other Christian organizations not giving students the ability/opportunity to explore their beliefs in faith? They welcome people to come to their services that aren't sure if they are religious or not. Explore: Doesn't the career center offer things like this to help students choose an organization? They're also hired professionals and not students that more than likely not going to school to learn how to advise a student in picking a major (which changes/paths that lndividual's whole life). Why would you be preparing for grad school if they didn't know their major? i don't know where she got her facts that "undeclared is the largest major at Truman" because that isn't a major offered here and I spend 20 minutes looking for a breakdown of how many students are taking each major and I can't find published on any site onilne. I think everything this person wants this club to do is offered by the Career Center (who again is hired for this speci?c reason). Also, Taylor found this after a quick Google search. it's meant to help students who have not declared a major LinguaProfs: There's already a departmental linguistics club. What makes them unique from them? Love Your Melon: Seems like this organization is going just going to be selling Items. l'm also not sure how many children are treated for cancer at Kirksville's hospital (no child wing or cancer ward) and l'm also not sure how they would even get the information that there is a sick kid in the hospital here. If i was a parent] wouldn't willingly give that information up. They limit the organization to at most 20 members Phi Alpha Delta: Don't we already have 2 other organizations for law/criminal justice? Connections are more difficult to make/utilize when you justjoined/started the club. Most of the organizations that pride themselves in being able to help build professional connections have been around for a while and have had hundreds of members already (DSP). Pickleball Club: If l'm a casual player why would I Want to go join an organization? if that happened shouldn't badminton club be massive? Very worried about membership retention/recruitment/generai membership as a whole. Pre-Pharm: What issue caused them to go inactive? if its membership, how do they plan on remedying that issue? How many people are at Truman that are at going for pre-pharm? Trans Alliance: Concerned that people will not be able to offer the support needed (emotionally) and there is always the possibility that someone will say something to a person who is not a part of the group that a member does not want everyone else to know. l'm also unsure of the sustainability of the organization (1 don't know how large the population of transgender individuals is on campus). This has been a big issue we talk about a lot when we debate what groups to charter and which ones to not charter. How would they go about making a better support system for this community (PRISM) and how would they foster more personal/Intimate conversations? Why does PRISM not talk about politics (there might be a reason for something about safe Spaces or triggers)? PRISM talks about issues within the LG BT community and that seems to be the same thing as "social issues concerning transgender identities. TruFencing: Will they have issues with membership? I have only met one person in my life that fences. Where would they be doing practices and such? i don't know of any place in that promotes fencing. Also, seems like it could be quite dangerous if not don't correctly. i don't know what facilities at Truman they think they are going to be able to use Vegetarian Club: "molestation of animals" that is very very very extreme. The organization doesn't apply to everyone, I'm not nor will i probably ever be a vegetarian. If they say they are going to be a loosely knit group, then how do they expect to be abie to function as an organization at the level they seem to desire to? i also find it impossible to believe that the word that there will be a vegetarian club on campus has "already Increased the sheer numbers". it is a diet/lifestyle choice that people make for their own independent reasons. There have also been studies coming out the last few years that point to being vegetarian/vegan might end up being worse for some people due to the lack of nutrients they get while on these diets/lifestyles. So there could be the potential risk of miseducatlng peOple interested in joining the club/lifestyle Snrina 2017 Charterina - Round 1 Organizations: . Phi Alpha Delta 2. 'IckleballClub 3. Other than necessitating people of all different intellectual backgrounds (as opposed to just encouraging/accepting it), this group has bleeding priorities. [Personally being a part of music, athletic, social, and honors organizations, I concede to the fact that every organization on campus has a need/want factor to it]. This organization indeed applies to the life of EVERY person, not just on campus, but in the world, as well as all other sentient creatures, too. And, in speaking of these dilemmas faced by all animals on earth, our club offers one simple solution that can mitigate the vast majority of them. This status will ensure the ability to organize better routes of success for teaching others and helping them with transitioning their diet. As an actual organization, leverage in receiving funds from the university would allow us to request guest speakers on our areas of interest which would in turn cultivate the attention of even more prospective members. Finally, our loosely knit group would want to officially establish our presence on campus so people remain actively recruiting new members each yea r. These future members would continue to peak the interest of others for many years to come by organizing committees that focus around offering support, advice, and options for aspiring/veteran veg*ns, spreading the facts of veg*ism, and forming bonds with other groups/departments to aid in their causes and request their assistance in our causes. (For more information on the Cocurricular Planninq Map visit cocurricular.truman.eduL Cultural Exploration and Community Engagement Intellectual Competence and Re?ective Judgment Healthy Habits and Balanced Living Effective Leadership and Responsible Citizenship Describe how this orqanization differs from other chartered organizations on campus. This organization has the potential to serve an existing interest group on campus that is at a disadvantage. The shared diet and lifestyle among members will assist those in the club by means of sharing concerns and challenges with those who can empathize. Organization events such as dining out and grocery shopping will allow those who already subscribe to a plant- based diet to feel more included on campus in a way that no current organization does. Explain why this organization wants to obtain chartered status with the Center for Student Involvement. There is already a sizeable vegetarian/vegan population within the wider Truman community. Obtaining chartered status would help the existing vegetarian/vegan community come together and organize for the purposes outlined above. Having a central, chartered organization for existing vegetarians/vegans to come to encourages continuity over time in a way that an informal community cannot through room reservations, a table at the Activities Fair, fundraising on campus, participation in multi-organization service/other events, etc. Will this organization be nationally affiliated? Please indicate this organization's frequency of travel High Moderate Low How will the chartering of this organization contribute to the mission of Truman State University and how will the campus community and student members bene?t from its existence? (Visit abouttruman.edulmission.asp to read the mission) Coming into contact with the thoughts of others is a learning experience for all students, vegetarian/vegan or not, because it allows them to sympathize in a way they had not before. Part of a Liberal Arts education is learning about the viewpoints and understanding the philosophies of those different from them. This promotes the intellectual growth of anyone who attends a meeting and inspires service to fellow students through organizing food-related group activities in which vegetarians/vegans are more widely accommodated. Interested students with questions about vegetarianism/veganism will have a clear place to ask questions and learn. lf chartered. how will you ensure that this gganization will exist and thrive long after your graduation? We will advertise the existence of the club and bring in incoming freshman vegetarians/vegans as well as upperclassmen who practice vegetarianism/veganism. The number of vegetarians and vegans grows every year in the US, so we can expect this population to grow on campus as well. Further, vegetarian/vegan students on campus will be drawn to the group because it will be a valuable resource in terms of support and socializing with students of a common interest in an organized way. The population of vegetarians/vegans on campus is already substantial and growing, organization aside, so the future prospects for continued interest are bright. Beyond these trends, the potential founding members come from all age groups on campus, which is important for continuity. After careful deliberation the Organization Development Team has concluded that the proposed new student organization, Vegetarian Club, does not fully meet the chartering requirements outlined by the Center for Student Involvement. Policy further dictates that organizations are expected to discuss "topics including, but not limited to: risk management." In your address of risk management for the organization, we still were left with a number risk management concerns because of the nature of your proposed organization. We see serious risk in giving students information on what to eat to be vegetarian and where to get it in the Kirksville community. However, we still see risk in students monitoring other students' health and keeping track of their dietary records. Although it may be suggested to a student to talk to a nutritionist before changing their diet, there is no guarantee they will do so if they are being informed by the club of de?cits in the diet change or if they just feel it is unnecessary. This could put all of the risk on the club if their health were to decline. Also, while a liability to protect the school is helpful, it would not protect the club in the situation. Jimmy Clemens is still one of the main contacts for the new organization and is the one who emailed us the new proposal. While he does argue that it is an "entirely new organization," I feel a lot of the changes are based on the suggestions we have in the email declining the ability to charter. They took out a lot of the risk we saw about telling people what foods they should eat as a vegetarian to maintain a healthy diet. Organizations are supposed to take these considerations in mind to apply again to charter in a year. I have attached the old application, the new application, and the email I sent declining the opportunity to go through the chartering process for you to look at. Upon looking at the application submitted for Roots and the application submitted for Vegetarian Club, the purpose of Roots is to serve as a support group for vegetarians/vegans and the purpose of Vegetarian Club was to inform others on the health advantages of the vegetarian/vegan lifestyle, provide support, and how to maintain the lifestyle. As stated in our email to you, the reason we were unable to extend an offer to charter to Vegetarian Club was due to risk management concerns about "giving students information on what to eat to be vegetarian and where to get it in the Kirksville community". We felt that dietary suggestions should be left to specialized medical professionals due to the potential for health?related risks. In the email, if interested in reapplying to charter in the future, we also encouraged you to focus on these areas to revise your proposal. It is our office policy, as stated with the online application, that "students may reapply in one full year". For this reason, we are unable to extend Roots the ability to charter this semester, based on the one year policy. Roots appears to have taken our suggestions to Vegetarian Club to adapt and reduce its risk, making the groups too similar to classify as different proposals. If the club would like to apply again next Spring, they would be able to then. I also know that the application submission form is no longer available, but after submitting a form last time (during of?ce hours) and talking to Damon, he said the application deadline was at midnight. Seeing the cutoff for this round of chartering, there is still no time attached to the deadline, so we assumed the time would be the same. I also know that I went through the process last time with a proposed "Vegetarian Club,? but I also emailed Damon about it being-mot an alteration to our previous organization-- but rather an entirely new organization with a completely different mission statement. - Anyway, I wanted to submit this form now because I believe it is still within the expected submission timeframe. Thank you so much for reading another email from me, Jimmy Clemens. charterapplication_vege.act 1 . .. 1/2 Vegetarian Club Risk Management Without extensive knowledge of the pescatarian, vegetarian, or vegan diet in comparison with the typical western diet, we assume that there is no difference between a non-meat diet and a meat-containing diet pertaining to health risks or bene?ts. However, denying the fact that any change in daily behavior can cause physical risk would be absurd. Club prevention tactics: To point attendees in the right direction, we provide a list of all macromolecules and micronutrients necessary to the human diet with a list of food sources from where you can get these nutrients. Diet Survey: In order to track any health problems with students interested in the diet, we will have attendees ?ll out a dietary questionnaire, asking what food items they have chosen to cut from their diet as well as what new food items have increased in amount in their diet (either or due to information provided by our organization). From this survey we will determine any new de?cits in the student?s nutritional intake and inform them on what nutrient differences we see in their diet. We will also require members to update their dietary records whenever they have another change in diet (due to the club). We will not give them implicit nutritional plans on how to correct their diets. Liability waiver: Concerning the part of their diet a student decides to change (and any additional time they decide to change it) because of the information they heard from our organization, we will make them sign a waiver stating that the school is not responsible for any health complications caused by that change in diet. Further, we will request that they either see their doctor or a nutritionist before changing their diet or assume ?ill responsibility for their health if they do not consult a professional. If at any time the student notices a decline in overall health at all, we will require them to discontinue any club-induced dietary changes until they consult the change in health with a professional and their health recuperates. For those who choose to disseminate information outside of meetings, we acknowledge risk as part of the process. Club prevention tactics: Before assuming the role as an external ?veducator,? we will have the student take a class on how to ef?ciently, effectively, and tactfully give verbal and tangible information to consenting recipients. Written agreement: Before a student reaches out to others outside of meetings to tell them about information pertaining to the club, we will require them to ?ll out a form stating that they will ask someone ?rst if they have time to talk about the intended topic and if they agree to discuss the intended topic (if the discussion pertains to information provided by our organization). The form will also require that the student stops verbal New Student Organization Proposal Proposed Organization Name: 0 Roots 0 Friends Not Food Describe this organization's official purpose/mission and goals. Organization events such as dining out and grocery shopping will allow those who already subscribe to a plant-based diet to feel more included on campus in a way that no current organization does. Explain why this organization wants to obtain chartered status with the Center for Student Involvement. There is already a sizeable vegetarian/vegan population within the wider Truman community. Obtaining chartered status would help the existing vegetarian/vegan community come together and organize for the purposes outlined above. Having a central, chartered organization for existing vegetarians/vegans to come to encourages continuity over time in a way that an informal community cannot through room reservations, a table at the Activities Fair, fundraising on campus. participation in multi~organization service/other events, etc. Will this organization be nationally af?liated? (Visit about.truman.edulmission.asp to read the university mission) Coming into contact with the thoughts of others is a learning experience for all students, vegetarian/vegan or not, because it allows them to sympathize in a way they had not before. If chartered. how will you ensure that this organization will exist and thrive long after your graduation? We will advertise the existence of the club and bring in incoming freshman vegetarians/vegans as well as upperclassmen who practice vegetarianism/veganism. The number of vegetarians and vegans grows every year in the U.S., so we can expect this population to grow on campus as well. PI 3 rovi al' f1 nit rs ernme and Telephone Number of each]. After careful deliberation the Organization Development Team has concluded that the proposed new student organization, Vegetarian Club, does not fully meet the chartering requirements outlined by the Center for Student Involvement. The specific areas of concern which ultimately shaped our decision are as follows: Policy further dictates that organizations are expected to discuss ?topics including, but not limited to: risk management." In your address of risk management for the organization, we still were left with a number risk management concerns because of the nature of your proposed organization. We see serious risk in giving students information on what to eat to be vegetarian and where to get it in the Kirksville community. We feel that dietary suggestions should be left to professionals due to the potential for health complications. Vegetarian Club conflicts with specific guidelines outlined by the CSI for chartering new organizations, therefore, we are not permitted to extend the group an opportunity to charter. While understanding your passion behind vegetarianism, we encourage you to focus on these areas when revising your proposal, should you hope to reapply for a charter in the future. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Organizational Development Team?s Staff Advisor, Damon Pee at (660) 785-4222 or at damonp@truman.edu. Thank you very much for your interest in chartering a new group! Sincerely, Taylor Collins Proposed Organization Name: Vegetarian Club Describe this organization's official purpose/mission and goals. To create a fair chance at life for every sentient being on the planet. - to inform others on the molestation of other animals so more people support equality for those animals - to inform others about the potential to solve world food, water, energy, etc. shortages to support healthful lives for all humans - to inform others on the health advantages of a veg lifestyle so all are aware of how to live well - to offer advice to members on how to disseminate the above information to others in an ef?cient and successful manner - to offer support to members on how to maintain their own efforts of a veg lifestyle Which Cocurricular Record Quadrant best describes the central focus/mission/purpose of this organization? Healthy Habits and Balanced Living Describe how this organization differs from other chartered organizations on campus. This potential organization embodies the Liberal Arts de?nition. Accepting of any major. this group will require all of them to be effective. Bio, Chem, Sci, and Ex Sic majors are necessary in order to teach the group human anatomy and how our bodies take to the various forms of "food." Bio, Ag Sci, and Econ majors are needed to research and assess the disparate facets of life which veg*ism effects. Poly Sci, Anthro, Soc, and majors are required for leverage in the battle of ethics against public leaders and the government. And, of course, Comm, CS, Foreign Language, and any Pre- MAE majors are of the utmost help in this information spreading to other communities around the world and in future generations. Other than necessitating people of all different intellectual backgrounds (as opposed to just encouraging/accepting it), this group has bleeding priorities. [Personally being a part of music, athletic, social, and honors organizations, I concede to the fact that every organization on campus has a need/want factor to it]. This organization indeed applies to the life of EVERY person, notjust on campus, but in the world, as well as all other sentient creatures, too. And, in speaking of these dilemmas faced by all animals on earth, our club offers one simple solution that can mitigate the vast majority of them. Thus, our goal is to inform everyone on earth about the bene?ts that veg*ism has for our bodies, the environment, and other animals because the solution lies within the personal choices that every human being makes about three times a day. Explain why this organization wants to obtain chartered status with the Center for Student Involvement. in order to foster a better reputation for the veg*ns on campus, our club wants to establish itself as a group which can hold its own meetings (easier access to room reservations). This status will ensure the ability to organize better routes of success for teaching others and helping them with transitioning their diet. As an actual organization, leverage in receiving funds from the university would allow us to request guest speakers on our areas of interest which would in turn cultivate the attention of even more prospective members. Finally, our loosely knit group would want to officially establish our presence on campus so people remain actively recruiting new members each year. These future members would continue to peak the interest of others for many years to come by organizing committees that focus around offering support, advice, and options for aspiring/veteran veg*ns, spreading the facts of veg*ism, and forming bonds with other groups/departments to aid in their causes and request their assistance in our causes. Will this organization be nationally af?liated? No
