Emergency Notification as Required by Rule 8

On October 12th Colorado Stone Quarries had a diesel spill as a result of a faulty pump not
turning off. The resulting spill was not believed to be substantial and therefore was not reported as
timely as it could have been. The spill leaked through the surface and into a waste rock built pad. This
allowed the diesel to flow underground unnoticed. Multiple circumstances led to this situation. Spill
was contained with loose dirt silt material that absorbed and served as a berm for the diesel and
boomers are in place.
On October 15th, it was discovered that spill amounts were calculated at about 4,000 gallons of
red died diesel. On October 16th the final spill amount was determined to be 5,500 gallons. At this time
Colorado Stone Quarries (CSQ) personnel contacted and engineer for consultation. CSQ then contacted
DRMS by phone and attempted to contact multiple CDPHE personnel by phone as well but did not get a
hold of anyone. Prior to contacting DRMS personnel, CSQ reached out to Clean Harbors and acquired
information on an emergency spill response team.
It is not believed that this spill will cause any adverse impacts to human health, property or the
environment beyond permit boundaries.
Conditions are currently as follows. CSQ has removed dirt from the lower area of the spill and
has put a berm up in place and boomers to keep diesel spill from spreading. Clean Harbors will be
sending out a lead emergency spill response man first thing on October 17th. An engineer will arrive first
thing in the morning on October 17th. Arrangements are currently in the process for guidance and
disposal of material.
