I understand yourconcern about Baverstafflaklng the lead Ifyou're uncomfortable, I do suggest Steve (unless he's too busy-- I've never worked with him so I am unsure about his general turnaround on thistype ofthing). Regardless, we should move forward. I'm only in the office the rest of this week, and then l'm 1 weekto make final preparanonsfor the trip. I'll be in Germany 1 Sept--7 March. I should be ableto help nudge things along while gone. Form --you might have Dan contact trana reigen who I atho oversee this in my absence. Therefore, I will try to be brief. We [Bayer Bee Care Center) are doing varrocide efficacy testing of four varroacide products (anvaml, Apistan, CheckMite+, and Apivar) plus a check, all replicated three times in each of 3.9 states. Also, we are trying to coordinate a methods comparison component with HIP, as well as survivor mite rollections (Survivors of 24 hr aayvarol and CheckMite+ exposures, each followed immediately by a 4 hr Apivar as survivor knockdown) both in 34 states. We just completed NC for efficacy testing and survivor mite collections, and we have plans to do VA next week. Dan Schmehl suggested you might be interested in participating by allowing us access to 15 Varroa infested hives. ban would even go to FLto do the work. it is a two person job, so if your lab cannot spare an assistant, we can easily send Kim Huntzinger along with him -- in fact, she may go along anyway since she is experienced at the process and with dovetailing the various tasks. The whole endeavor takes 3 days. Are you interested and to be involved and contribute the colonies we need for khls? I can send you protocols and work plans if you would like to see them. lust let me know. Another question. I am still interested in following up on your suggestion of publishing a paper on the definition ofa healthy honey bee colony. Bath Steve Sheppard and I offered draft definitions at the mom meeting and the working group then crafted another version. I developed and have been using another version for many decades, now that I think about it, that is suitable for a snapshot in time (see attached). I feel the HHZOZO (Sheppard) version is more suited to a longer term view. In any case, ifeel we have enough material, experience, and agreement to tackle a coauthored paper. Time for everyone is an issue though. I have talked with Dan about this, and we are willing to start working on such a paper by doing an outline, literature review, and some preliminary draft wording and proposed definitions based on the versions we have so far. . I am attaching the version I use for determining if a colony is apparently "healthy" based on colony assessment and results of lab diagnoses for VM, NOS, and HBTM. Are you still interested in this initiative, and are you ok with us taking the lead on the early stages of article prep? Dan and I discussed who should be lead author and we feel that for best optics, maybe you or Steve, or someone other than a Bayer staff member should be lead author. always planned to do such a paper myself, but now that so many ofus have a common interest in this article, feel our current multicauthar approach would be better received and more highly respected. Vour khoughts? I hope you enjoy your time in EU. Best regards, Dick chard E.L. So, will this be a large manuscript with every component of the definition justified using the literature or more like a scientific note where we throw out a definition, but with little other information? I gather the former. will we talk about how to determine what is a healthy hive? i think this will be a very valuable manuscript and one that is highly cited, perhaps Keep well.
