We will not march forward with any plans until all constituents are bought off. Like I said if we can create satisfying " business presence " , a large data center is likely not required. Sheryl seemed to feel that she could hire for the business presence in Ireland as she has done so in the past at Google. I'm around Monday, Tuesday and Thursday this week, so let's plan to synch up in person. Last year, Gideon volunteered to opt1m1ze tax strategies based on data center location. When we decided not to build a data center in 2008, I lost track of our international plans and timeline. Are we realistically planning on building a call center or other staff center there? sales has already hired a substantial presence in London and my team has been interviewing folks to wor k in London (including 1 guy who's trying to relo from Google in Ireland!) The absolute number of people is fairly low in the grand scheme, I'd imagine these efforts can be redirected if we ' re changing course. Ireland is not a first or second choice for a significant data center presence. I'm happy to chat further , I was only informed of this decision by Sheryl in a hallway conversation. Thanks. -jh-----ori gi na l Message----From: Cipora Herman Sent: Wednesday , June 25, 2008 9:42 AM To: Sheryl Sandberg; Ted Price; Gideon Yu; Aldo King; Jonathan Heiliger cc: Chris Kim subject: Re: international headquarters Ted and I will discuss with JH. The issue with the data center is not necessarily the headcount presence, but rather the servers and the information contained therein. One of the key factors to establishing the tax advantages lays with the transfer of IP from the us domestic entity to the internatl HQ. The servers and the key source code and user data help build the case for IP presence. We can discuss what that needs to/ should look like. It probably does not preclude us from having a large data center elsewhere, but some presence in IRL will be very beneficial. Mark is fine with any recommendation that Gideon and I support. Ireland our top choice if we can work out specifics. We can consider Spoke to Jonathan (copied on this). Ireland is not ideal for a data center but as Jonathan points out, a dada center has very few jobs. Given that we have a limited amount of hiring we will do anywhere - we just don't need that many people in anything yet - is it ok for the data ce nt er in Europe to be elsewhere?
