Best regards. Hea [hy as 231 Healthy Hives 2020 is a Bayer CropScience (BCS) initiative for improving the health of honey bee colonies in the Uniled States by the year 2020. BCS will partner togetherwith experts on bee health and establish an advisory council to discuss strategies to improve honey bee health. BCS is organizing a two-day workshop on June 2-3, 2015 with the goal of defining the current status of honey bee health in the US and setting three tangible and measurable initiatives to improve honey bee health by the year 2020. Why are you asking me to be a part of the Healthy Hives 2020 initiative? We consider you a prominent expert on bee health. We want your input and perspective! The womshop is intended to bring together individuals from multiple sectors (3.9., academic government, business) to define tangible ways to address bee health concerns. The best ideas will be put into an action plan that will include sponsoring research through partnerships with organizations such as Project Apis Follinator Partnership. Honey Bee Health Coalition. etc, as well as research funded directty by Bayer's Bee Care Center. vs 10/2/2016 Gmail Invitation to participate in Healthy Hives 2020 workshop How does this initiative complement the Honey Bee Health Coalition, the Varroa Summit, · and other initiatives designed to promote honey bee health? Bayer's objectives are to: 1. Establish bee health improvement research priorities with measurable goals 2. Enhance the spirit of collaboration and partnering through communication, feedback and common ground 3. Sponsor key activities that can make a real difference through a research proposal call-in and funding program. What will be discussed during the workshop? We will identify the major stressors currently threatening po!linator health and define what colony health measures can be collected and assembled nationwide. Example questions may be: What is the definition of a "healthy colony"? How do we regionally quantify and qualify the current status of Varroa infestations across the country (i.e. are we having any success in Varf'Oa management? Are current colony management practices satisfactory? If not, what do honey bee colonies need to survive and prosper? What path forward will enhance collaboration and communication? Who decides where the available research funds are awarded? A five-person steering committee will review and rank the ideas generated at the workshop at a half-day follow-up meeting on the morning of Thursday, June 5th. The steering committee will develop an action plan that will include recommendations for sponsoring research through partnerships with third-party organizations such as Project Apis m., Pollinator Partnership, Honey Bee Health Coalition, etc., as well as research funded directly by Bayer's Bee Care Center. Members of the steering committee will not be eligible for funding. What is the location of the workshop? The workshop will be held at the North American Bayer Bee Care Center. The target dates for the workshop are June 2-3, 2015. The members selected to the steering committee will meet on the morning of June 5, 2015 to prioritize the ideas generated at the workshop. Will BCS be covering the travel expenses for my travel? Yes, all workshop-related travel expenses will be covered by BCS. Richard E.L. (Dick) Rogers, M.Sc.
