Authority and Hula Grill Waikiki

Each contestant must complete a lei wili before the judges at the
contest site. The lei must be started and completed within one hour.
Lei must be either lei ‘a‘i (neck lei) or lei po ‘o (head lei). Endangered
plants must not be used in their lei.

Contestants will be judged throughout the day for their poise, grace,
and personality.

‘Olelo Pelekane

To convey the spirit of aloha, each contestant will be required to give
a short speech (in English) on what Lei Day means to them; describe
the Hawaiian values they feel the Lei King/Queen should live/ pracce/possess; why they want to be Lei King/Queen; and, why they feel
they are qualified to serve as the Lei King/Queen.

As one of the two official languages of the State of Hawai‘ i, each
contestant will recite a short ‘olelo. Judges will be looking for proper
pronuncia on, feel and use of ‘Olelo Makuahine - mother tongue.

Hula

Each contestant will perform a hula ‘auana (modern hula) of their
choice.
