The Missouri School of Journalism University of Missouri-Columbia 65211-1200 CRMA AND THE MISSOURI SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM ANNOUNCE AWARD FINALISTS March 20, 2020 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE www.citymag.org 2020 National City and Regional Magazine Awards Finalists Magazine professionals from around the country chose 175 finalists representing 33 publications in the 35-year-old City and Regional Magazine Association’s national awards competition. Magazines of varying circulations competed in 35 categories, including editorial, design, online, multiplatform storytelling and general excellence. Judges named five finalists in each category and will soon choose one ultimate winner in each. The winners for work completed in 2019 will be announced at a CRMA awards night, which will be livestreamed this year. The specific date, likely to be in late May, will be announced. Topping this year’s list of finalists with double-digit selections were 5280 (Denver), Baltimore Magazine, Boston Magazine, Chicago Magazine, D Magazine, Indianapolis Monthly, Philadelphia Magazine, Portland Monthly, Texas Monthly and Washingtonian. Magazines with five or more selections include Seattle Met, St. Louis Magazine and Yankee Magazine. Mpls.St.Paul Magazine, Rhode Island Magazine and Sactown Magazine each received three finalist selections. Columbus Monthly, Honolulu Magazine, Louisville Magazine and Palm Springs Life received two selections each, and 417 Magazine, 435 Magazine, Austin Monthly, Buffalo Spree, Charlotte Magazine, Cleveland Magazine, Distinction, Houstonia, New Orleans Magazine, Phoenix Magazine, San Diego Magazine, Sarasota Magazine and Sonoma Magazine each had one finalist. This year’s finalists covered topics such as: • A community’s efforts to help local families pay for cancer treatment • Regional struggles in the wake of an oil boom • The impact of climate change • Racial disparity and police brutality toward African American men • Rigid post-childbirth hospital procedures • One man’s descent from competitive cycling into serial bank robbing • A medical board’s negligence in disciplining physicians • The positive influence of a prison writing group on inmates Other contenders focused on an unsung yet affable tow-truck driver, a FIFA Women’s World Cup star and a harrowing event in a news anchor’s past. More than 100 judges selected the finalists. They included representatives from publications and media outlets such as AARP the Magazine, Advertising Age, The Atavist Magazine, The Atlantic, Best Life, Better Homes & Gardens, Consumer Reports, Cosmopolitan, Country Gardens, Discover Magazine, Dwell, Eater, ESPN, Fast Company, Food & Wine, Forbes, Garden & Gun, GQ Germany, Harvard Business Review, Houston Press, IEEE Spectrum, Inc. Magazine, Life Magazine, Men’s Health, Meredith Corporation, Miami New Times, Midwest Living, Milwaukee Business Journal, Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, National Geographic, The New York Times, New York Magazine, Newsweek, OH-SO, Out Magazine, Outdoor Life, Popular Mechanics, Rachael Ray In Season, Riverfront Times, Southern Living, Sports Illustrated, Successful Farming, Sunset, Time, Time Out, Vanity Fair, Voice Media Group and The Washington Post, as well as journalism professors from the Missouri School of Journalism. The competition is open to members of CRMA. The national competition has been in existence for 35 years and has been coordinated by the University of Missouri School of Journalism on behalf of CRMA for the past 24 years.
