DATE: 30 MARCH 2020. Since the inception of COVID 19 lockdown Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) took a proactive approach and ensured that its services continue to be rendered to all the deserving citizens of South Africa whilst the country is fighting the dangerous corona virus. Due to the fact that people’s movements will be restricted for 21 days IPID shared its 24 hour standby numbers. These numbers were intended for cases falling under IPID mandate. IPID mandate deals with the following: 1. Death in police custody; 2. Death as a result of police action; 3. Any complaint relating to discharge of police firearm by police official; 4. Rape by police official whether on or off duty 5. Rape in police custody; 6. Any complaint relating to torture or assault by police official performing or executing official duties; 7. Any complaint relating to corruption within the police (initiated by the IPID Executive Director, or received from a public member, or referred by the Minister of Police, MEC for Transport and Community Safety / MEC for Community Safety or the Secretary. 8. Any other matter which the IPID Executive Director or Minister and or MEC or Secretary may refer for the Executive Director his/her discretionary decision. Any other complaints not listed above are regarded as an outside IPID mandate matters. IPID has no mandate to investigate members of SANDF. Police has such a mandate. Up to this morning 06:00 IPID received a total number of 21 cases broken down as follows: 1. EC 1 x discharge of police firearm 2. FS 2 x Assault by police official 3. GP 1 x death as a result of police action; 4. GP 6 x Discharge of police firearm; 5. GP 3 x Assault by police official; 6. GP 1 x Corruption complaint 7. KZN 1 x Assault by police official; 8. LIM registered NIL. 9. MP 1 x Discharge of police firearm; 10. MP 1 x Assault by police official; 11. MP 1 x Corruption complaint 12. NC Registered Nil; 13. NW Registered Nil. 14. WC 2 x Death as a result of police action; 15. WC 1 x Rape by police official. Total number of registered cases since the inception of lockdown is: 21. IPID standby numbers per Province: 1.
