U.S. magazine production uses about two-and-a-half million tons of paper per year, and most is printed almost exclusively on paper that hasn't been recycled, resulting in more than 35 million trees being cut down each year. By not using recycled paper, enormous amounts of energy and water are wasted, and more pollution is created. Almost all magazine paper is bleached with chlorine or chlorine compounds, which produce the extremely toxic chemical dioxin. Approximately 90 percent of all magazines are discarded within a year of publication, and only about 20 percent of these are recycled. Currently less than 5 percent of magazine paper has any recycled content, but this is starting to change. A number of magazines have committed to using environmentally responsible paper—that is, paper that contains post-consumer recycled waste. This is material discarded after consumer use, such as magazines, newspapers, office waste, and old telephone directories. Preconsumer waste, on the other hand, was discarded before consumer use and may have never left the paper mill. Do you receive magazines or newspaper at home? You are going to watch a video about a girl named Clementine who finds a very creative way to use old magazines. Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Learning Try your hand at making paper from old newspapers. For a demonstration, check out Making Recycled Paper. • • • • 1:30pm2:00pm 2:00pm3:00pm Brain Break Science "What other materials could you use to make recycled paper?" How might the paper made from these materials differ from that made from newspaper? How do you think a paper plant makes recycled paper so much smoother and thinner than the paper the cast members made? The process in the video used a lot of resources to recycle a small bit of paper. Do you think the amount of aluminum foil, cornstarch, water, and additional newspaper to absorb extra water is "worth" the new piece of paper? Why or why not? What else in addition to trees may be saved by recycling paper? Fitness Activity Les Mills-Baila with Me Art: Draw Dr. Suess Or Mo Willems: Episode 7 Why are some places always hot? In this lesson you will investigate the world’s five different climates. In the activity, Climate Decoder, you will color a world map to figure out the different climates of that region. Since we are working from home right now, you will create all the maps and then put them together to see the world. If you don’t have a ruler, you can use the edge of a piece of paper to help draw a straight line. If you don’t have colored pencils, use your pen or pencil to draw different designs to represent the colors. You can use a key like this one: Color: Image: Symbol: Blue Snowflake Yellow Cloud Red Sun Purple Raindrop Orange Leaf Begin by accessing the parts of your map: Americas, Asia & Australia, Europe & Africa. When you’re ready, open the video and begin today’s lesson. 3:00pm8pm Relax, Play, Time with Family r9 f: Fresno Ifni?orl Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and Professional Learning School District 8pm-9pm Lights Out
