COVID-19 Student Survey

The Undergraduate Student Government at Tempe formed an Ad-Hoc Committed for the
COVID-19 Response to identify and address the needs of students during this unprecedented
crisis.
The committee sent out the survey on March 25 and have recorded 1,500+ student responses.
We asked students for their feedback on the transition to online instruction, the proposal for
curving grades for spring 2020, prorated refunds for meal plans, parking, and housing.
The following are the results of the survey.

 Average Tuition Costs

Average tuition costs1 for an in-state student at Arizona State for the
Tempe campus is $10,710.
Average room and board costs1 for an in-state student at Arizona
State for the Tempe campus is $8,336.

On March 16, Arizona State announced1 the continuation of online instruction for the
remainder of the semester.

“It’s difficult for me to be online because most of my
classes are hands on and now everything is cancelled and I
don’t want to fail a class because of this challenge.”

 “Even though the transition may have been smooth(ish) to
online it doesn’t mean students (especially students in
hard to teach online majors) aren’t struggling immensely.
Myself and all of my friends struggle in an online learning
environment, that being the reason we took in person
classes to begin with.”

 “I feel my classes are not adequately preparing me for the
next level of classes I will be taking next semester,

“It is not inappropriate to ask if I will get my money back for a
dorm room I’ve been encouraged to vacate, or for the meal plan I
can’t use from home, or for the parking permit I can’t use from
home. These questions are especially appropriate when I have
rent and other bills due soon, and I’ ve been laid off from my job
due to the virus.”
