MANUFACTURER OF EXCLUSIVE AUTOMOBILES B M W A L P I N A D 3 S - S A L O O N AW D • T O U R I N G AW D PRESS RELEASE May 2020 SURPRISING. THRILLING. CLEVER. THE NEW BMW ALPINA D3 S SURPRISING. The new BMW ALPINA D3 S combines the best of two worlds: a drivetrain that offers excellent throttle response at low rpm’s yet which is sporty and high-revving, unlike most typical modern diesels. A consistently forceful power delivery, peaking at an impressive output of 261 kW (355 hp) and a maximum torque of 730 Nm (538 lbs-ft), know how to surprise. The innovative BMW mild hybrid technology, which delivers a noticeable performance boost especially in the lower speed range, is adopted for the first time in a BMW ALPINA automobile. THRILLING. The powerful straight-six 3.0 litre diesel engine is perfectly matched to the 8-Speed Sport-Automatic Transmission 8HP76 and delivers stunning driving performance. The Saloon accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and the Touring in 4.8 seconds, accompanied by a distinct and lively engine soundtrack. With a top speed* of 273 km/h (Touring 270 km/h), the BMW ALPINA D3 S is one of the fastest diesel automobiles in its segment. CLEVER. The BMW mild hybrid technology maximises the efficiency of the high-performance engine, making the latest BMW ALPINA diesel model the ideal everyday companion for high-mileage drivers who value low fuel consumption but do not want to compromise on performance and dynamics. The new BMW ALPINA D3 S has been homologated to the latest Euro 6d-ISC-FCM emission standard and features state-of-the art exhaust gas treatment technology. Fuel consumption measured according to the new and more realistic WLTP measuring cycle (Worldwide Harmonized Light-Duty Vehicles Test Procedure) is 7.6 l/100 km with CO2 emissions of 199 g/km.** * In combination with ALPINA CLASSIC 20“ wheel / tyre combination reduced top speed by approximately 3 km/h. ** Preliminary data. Stated fuel consumptions and CO2 emissions are measured pursuant to EU Regulation 715/2007 in its applicable version. For more information please see NEW TEST PROCEDURE (WLTP) at the end of this press release. IMPRESSIVE OUTPUT – EXEMPLARY EFFICIENCY STRAIGHT-SIX 3.0 LITRE ENGINE WITH BITURBO CHARGING AND BMW MILD HYBRID TECHNOLOGY The new BMW ALPINA D3 S surprises with an engine character that is dominated by its eager willingness to rev up to the red-line, which is rather untypical for a diesel. Furthermore, ALPINA for the first time adopts the innovative BMW mild hybrid technology with a 48-volt starter generator for immediate throttle response and increased efficiency to effortlessly offer long driving ranges in combination with a high performance output. The straight-six 3.0 litre engine with Bi-Turbo charging offers a maximum output of 261 kW (355 hp). The maximum torque of 730 Nm (538 lbs-ft) is available between 1,750 and 2,750 rpm for immediate power delivery in every driving situation. The BMW ALPINA D3 S Saloon accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds (Touring in 4.8 seconds) and completes the sprint to 200 km/h in 17.5 seconds (Touring in 18.3 seconds). The maximum speed is 273 km/h (Touring 270 km/h).* The mild hybrid technology adopted from BMW not only enhances the efficiency of the high-performance diesel engine but also its dynamic response. Recuperated energy is stored in a 48-volt battery and supplied as additional power by a belt-driven 48-volt starter generator. With electrical power of up to 8  kW (11  hp) instantly available, engine and throttle response are unparalleled, especially at low engine speeds. At constant speeds, the engine can operate in an optimised load range thanks to the support of the electrical system, further improving efficiency. The mild hybrid technology also optimises the Auto Start Stop function, as the 48-volt starter generator allows for low-vibration starts and stops of the combustion engine. The high specific power output of the combustion engine is made possible by the latest injection and charging system with two exhaust gas turbochargers. Both the high- and the low-pressure stages have variable turbine geometry to ensure spontaneous boost delivery and throttle response. In combination with the ALPINA intercoolers, the ALPINA high-performance cooling system with large-volume coolers, a transmission oil cooler, two relocated coolant coolers and an electromechanical coolant pump, ensure the thermodynamic stability of the engine, even under maximum operating envelopes. A diesel oxidation catalyst and SCR coating in the diesel particulate filter together with an engine-near SCR system and two SCR catalysts with AdBlue® injection provide for reduction of the nitrogen oxides contained in the diesel exhaust. * In combination with ALPINA CLASSIC 20“ wheel / tyre combination reduced top speed by approximately 3 km/h. COMFORTABLE AND DYNAMIC POWER DELIVERY 8-SPEED SPORT-AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION & REAR AXLE LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL The 8-Speed Sport-Automatic Transmission 8HP76, developed in cooperation with transmission specialist ZF, is specially adapted to the performance characteristics of the high-torque straight-six diesel engine. The revised transmission software, in interplay with new transmission mechatronics, ensures fast response and quick shift times. The torque converter is reinforced to handle torque of up to 730 Nm. In the ALPINA specific COMFORT+ Shift Mode, the transmission shifts smoothly, gear changes are almost imperceptible. The shift points in SPORT Shift Mode are set for maximum driving performance and the gear changes are significantly faster and clearly noticeable. The driver can also change gears manually using the ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC shift buttons on the back of the steering wheel. In SPORT+ Shift Mode, automatic up-shifts at red-line rpm are suppressed for absolute driver control. New ergonomically optimised ALPINA SWITCH-TRONIC shift paddles, CNC machined from solid aluminium and finished in black matt, are optionally available. The BMW Connected Shift function uses the navigation data to calculate a predictive shift strategy for optimised energy efficiency. With the so-called sailing function in COMFORT and COMFORT+ mode, the 48-volt technology allows switching off the engine when the throttle is released and depending on the driving situation. The drivetrain includes an electronically controlled rear axle limited-slip differential as standard for enhanced driving dynamics, offering pure driving pleasure. The BMW ALPINA D3 S dynamically corners with a rear-wheel drive emphasis and the increased power transfer and traction allow particularly dynamic acceleration out of corners. SUPERIOR HANDLING, EFFORTLESS AGILITY THE ALPINA SPORT SUSPENSION The ALPINA Sport Suspension is the foundation of the BMW ALPINA D3 S’s dynamic potential. Suspension and chassis technology has been carried over from the super-fast and powerful BMW ALPINA B3, it is therefore ideally suited for the performance characteristic of this high-performance diesel. The extended wheelbase, an increased track width and greater chassis and suspension rigidity compared to the previous generation in addition to -1° camber at the front axle ensure superior handling in every driving situation. Springs from Eibach as well as bump stops and specifically adapted stabilisers come into play for a more balanced and harmonious set-up. The BMW ALPINA D3 S is very composed and stable, offering tactile feedback when cornering dynamically. The three Variable Damper Control modes COMFORT+, COMFORT and SPORT offer a wide range of driving experiences ranging from maximum ride comfort for everyday use to pronounced agility and lateral dynamics. The variable sports steering system provides the driver with three steering modes: COMFORT Mode with a focus on smooth directional stability with a high sense of safety even at high speeds, as well as SPORT and SPORT+ Mode for maximum responsiveness and precision. The all-wheel drive system is based on the intelligent BMW xDrive system, which fully variably distributes torque as required between the front and rear axle. The ALPINA specific, situational traction-optimised adjustment of the torque distribution is predominantly rear-wheel-biased to match the sportive character of the BMW ALPINA D3 S. CUSTOM-MADE WHEELS & TYRES Two wheel and tyre combinations were developed specifically for the new BMW ALPINA 3 Series models: an ALPINA DYNAMIC 19” alloy wheelset featuring a 5x4 spoke design and an ALPINA CLASSIC 20” forged wheelset with traditional 20-spoke design and lockable wheel hub cover. Compared to the regular wheels, these optionally available forged wheels improve agility by reducing unsprung masses by around 14 kg per vehicle. In cooperation with the tyre experts at Pirelli, the Pirelli P Zero ultra-high performance tyres marked ALP were carefully developed to meet the requirements of this new model generation and provide maximum grip. The tyre dimensions of the 70 dB at the ALPINA DYNAMIC 19‘‘ alloy wheels are 255/35 ZR19 at the front and 265/35 ZR19 at the rear (EU tyre label*: E/B/ 71 dB at the rear); those of the ALPINA CLASSIC 20‘‘ forged wheels** are 255/30 ZR20 at the front and 265/30 ZR20 at the rear front, E/B/ 70 dB at the front, E/B/ 71 dB at the rear). (EU tyre label*: E/B/ The ALPINA brake system, comprising four-piston fixed brake callipers with brake discs of 395 mm diameter on the front axle, carried-over from the powerful 608 hp BMW ALPINA B5 Bi-Turbo, and floating brake callipers with brake discs of 345 mm diameter on the rear axle, offer excellent braking performance. The brake callipers are painted in ALPINA Blue and feature a white ALPINA logo. The optionally available high-performance brake system with light-weight drilled composite brake discs and specific brake pads offers even higher thermodynamic reserves and more direct pedal feedback.*** * EU tyre label = fuel efficiency / wet grip / noise class, external rolling noise. ** In combination with ALPINA CLASSIC 20“ wheel / tyre combination reduced top speed by approximately 3 km/h. *** Please note that drilled bake discs may lead to a loss of acoustic comfort.
