New Mexico Senate Republican Office SENATOR GREGORY BACA May 15, 2020 R – Belen-29 OPEN UP NEW MEXICO Dear Governor Lujan Grisham, Although serious, effects of the COVID 19 virus have not risen to the levels initially thought by many experts and leaders both nationally and statewide. Common sense would dictate a rational, measured response to what we now know about the spread of this virus and the data available to us. With that, I urge you to now, as the chief executive of the State of New Mexico, lift all mandates under the current Order(s) in favor of a full opening of New Mexico by May 21, 2020 0800 hours. The recent Department of Health orders coupled with the separate and unrelated budget shortfall, caused by over optimism in the oil markets, will undoubtedly have disastrous effect on the New Mexico economy. This massive economic shortfall will impact services for those regularly receiving assistance as well as those who find themselves newly unemployed and impoverished. Any extensions to these Orders now cause damage to New Mexico the likes of which cannot be estimated in severity or duration. The time to act is now. The undersigned call on you to fulfill your duties as the prime fiduciary for this State and lift all New Mexico DOH orders regarding COVID 19 thereby authorizing the opening of all businesses in New Mexico by May 21, 2020 at 0800 under state issued guidelines for operation rather than mandated and enforced restrictions. Let us truly stand together in this serious time. Your attention and action regarding this matter is required and appreciated. Sincerely, Gregory A.
