We take great pride in serving ALL members of the community of Dayton to ensure the protection of life and property. The current turmoil unfolding across this country is the result of tragic incidents that have tranSpired outside of our community, and even our state. it has brought on a national debate over the excessive use?of? force by police of?cers across the nation. However, it should not immediately be concluded that members of the Dayton Police Department are responsible for such acts. In fact, this very issue was examined in 2018, and a report prepared by the Human Relations Council, Community Police Council, and Dayton Police Department members found differently. Jared Grandy delivered the results of a study, and expressed in a City Commission meeting, that Dayton of?cers almost never use excessive force, and of?cers involved in 841 out of the 849 use-of? force cases were exonerated in the investigations. At that time, Dayton leaders praised members of the Community?Police Council and the Dayton Police Department for providing important transparency, and working to educate the public about the complaint and review process. The FOP has taken pride in these facts but also realizes this is an ongoing national and local issue, and is open to continuing to find productive resolutions to such issues. On Wednesday June 3, 2020, City of Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley announced a 5-step initiative in an effort to address these issues. The is committed to continuing minority recruitment efforts. We welcome the idea of implementation of police body cameras to increase the transparency initiative. We would also support constructive dialog on the implementation of a community review committee.
