NOLA-PS Support Priority: System Wide Supplies Purchase ƒ In preparation for Fall 2020 the District will purchase the following supplies for all schools: ƒ ƒ ƒ ƒ ƒ ƒ Surgical face masks/facial coverings: 600,000 in various sizes Nitrile Gloves: 1,000,000 in various sizes Hand Sanitizer and Hand Sanitizer Stations: 10 gallons and 20 stations per site No Touch Thermometers: 4 per site Thermal-insulated food storage bags: 40 per site Disinfectants: 40 gallons per site ƒ Supplies Distribution: ƒ Distribution is planned for July. ƒ Each school will receive items based on student count and facility size. ƒ Funding: The district will seek maximum reimbursement for items through federal programs. NOLA- PS Support Priority: Students’ Mental and Behavioral Health 2019-2020 Core Focus Areas: Building on partnerships and strategies put into motion in the 2018-2019 school year, NOLA-PS has worked with partners to develop solutions to address how we help students who are struggling with mental and behavioral health challenges and the impact of chronic exposure to trauma in our public schools. • Launch of Training of Trainers Trauma-Informed Schools project (Partnership with City of New Orleans and Tulane University) • Increase capacity of schools to overcome the structural challenges of building and sustaining trauma-informed schools. • System-level and school-based individuals to receive training and support on the Trauma-Informed Schools (TIS) implementation model and then take those learnings to train others. • Expansion efforts in progress with Children's Hospital and four pilot schools to add tele-psychiatry services, which will allow eligible students access to psychiatric services during the school day. • Engagement with external stakeholders through the Behavior Health Council and the Children Youth and Planning Board trauma task force • Convening mental health leaders (e.g., school social workers, counselors and psychologists) to share best practices and discuss problems of practice • Building in trauma-informed and crisis management training for schools within the Systemwide Needs Program NOLA- PS Support Priority: COVID-19 and Immediate Response When the Covid-19 pandemic resulted in schools closing, we recognized the possibility of adverse mental health consequences that could further impact our students, schools and families. • In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, NOLA PS has: • Provided resources to schools specific to mental health and social-emotional learning supports during distance learning • Distributed a survey to mental health leaders to understand their unique needs during distance learning • Hosted a webinar for schools on providing virtual grief and crisis support to students • Created a working group of mental health leaders to make recommendations to the reopening task force • Engaged with community partners on how best to support the needs of students and families • Supported the development of a teacher needs assessment to understand their needs to support their well-being • We see the biggest challenges ahead as: • Increasing access to mental health services (both virtual and in-person) in the community and at school • Ensuring schools are equipped with the knowledge and tools to respond effectively to the needs of students and staff who have experienced adverse experiences, stressors and trauma NOLA- PS Support Priority: Key Actions for 2020-2021 1. Providing robust training opportunities for staff at all levels. • Systemwide Needs Program • Ongoing professional development to a cohort of social workers or other staff members in therapeutic crisis intervention and trauma-informed practices • Summer Training Collaborative • Virtual conference hosted by NOLAPS for schools to deliver citywide training in mental health, attendance, school climate, student discipline and a host of other topics • School Leader Training • Training CEO's/principals on the impact of trauma on students and providing them with planning guides to facilitate the integration of trauma-informed practices into school routines. • Training of trainers • Year two of this project will include three new schools (Osborne, Behrman and Encore) who will be trained over the next year to become trauma-informed schools 2. Provide resources, tools and support for schools to navigate the return to school and address social-emotional learning and mental health needs of students. 3. Advocacy efforts to increase schools' access to mental health services for students and continuing collaboration with key partners Direct Operations Update- Mary D.
