Addressed to The Hon. Gavin Newsom, Governor, State of California Hon. London Breed, Mayor, City of San Francisco Date: June 24th Dear Governor Newsom and Mayor Breed: I hope you both enjoyed the Juneteenth Celebration last Friday. I applaud both of you on your efforts to influence racial equity in the city of San Francisco and the broader California community. I’m writing you this letter on a different matter — finding a clean place for San Franciscans and Californians at large to find a place to work safely. My company, Globe provides safe empty homes for Californians to work during the day by the hour. ● ● ● We received a threatening letter from the city of San Francisco and City Attorney (source SF Chronicle here). Our attorneys have responded to that letter, but I am writing to you because we continue to have hosts signing up on a daily basis in San Francisco and throughout every major city in California. As a result, we are looking to work toward a solution to the dearth of safe work space throughout San Francisco and California and, as such, write to you. Californians being able to work safely is the #1 economic matter in California. Given our footprint and what is at stake, we’ve also sent this correspondence to other public officials throughout the state, but we look to your leadership to solve this issue on a local and state-wide basis. This letter will address 4 topics: Health, Work, the Economy & Safety and outline a specific ask for a path forward working together. 1. Health a. Thank you for your leadership in the early stages of Covid; your swift action saved lives. Unfortunately, there is another health crisis-- domestic violence is at its highest levels, as is child abuse. (New York Times, April 6, 2020 and Psychology Today, May 10, 2020). Californian’s mental health is at risk. Much of this is due to the confinement that is necessary to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Additionally, in the last 24 hours we’ve seen 7,149 new cases - a record. As we take steps to mitigate this growth it is critical we give Californians a safe place to work. 2. Work a. In January millions of Californians were crammed in the office. By June millions of Californians were crammed in their home. Going forward, people can’t cram into traditional workspaces like a coffee shop until we have a vaccine. Further, going forward, thousands of companies in California don’t know if or when to send their employees back to the office. We as a society need leadership and a middle ground. My company has started working with select corporations to place their employees in private & super clean living rooms for work that follow the CDC’s Covid-19 Guideline for Disinfection for Community Facilities. 3. Economy a. Millions of Californians have been furloughed or let go. We need quiet places to interview or take work calls. Leaving our productivity in its current state with 4 roommates sharing one desk or parents fighting for the sole computer in the house for example is not acceptable for an efficient California economy. People, holed up in their homes, are seeking clean, presentable places to take video calls for job interviews or get work done. Instead of splitting one desk space with a spouse, child or roommate we should provide private work space. Customers typically use Globe within their building or neighborhood. We make it easier to stay at home. 4. Safety a. We do not appreciate threats of jail time. We do not appreciate that during the week when George Floyd protests erupted, San Francisco placed its lead investigator to hunt down our hosts and their employers- and threaten them. Given our background we appreciate your word that SF City administrators will not elevate this matter or attempt to incarcerate us as we work together on this topic. Here is what we’re requesting: Mayor Breed, as the leader of the world’s most innovative and progressive city and Governor Newsom, as the Governor of this great country’s largest state, you have the opportunity to set the tone and show the way for not only for California but the entire country. We have some work ahead as we figure out how to work and live in this post Covid world. My peers Logan Green (Lyft) , Travis Kalanick (Uber), Brian Chesky (Airbnb) all took an antagonist approach to government threats in the past. This is the 2020s —- we are living in a new world and would like to take a more collaborative approach and work together to find a solution to this issue in a way that benefits all Californians. Here is our proposed solution: All empty home units that rent and follow the CDC’s cleaning standard would provide an 8.5% sales tax from all receipts received between the hours of 7am-10pm. We’d like to reach an agreement with San Francisco city by August 1st. Further, Governor Newsom, we’d like to craft an agreement that would serve as the basis for every municipality in California. We believe Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, Oakland, Santa Clara, Fresno and all of the cities we are operating in within California can follow our lead. Let’s take this moment in history and come to the table and find a solution where 15MM+ Californians can find safe & productive places to work. We look forward to working with you and your team to find a solution to home congestion work productivity so that people may work in a safe environment and our economy may continue to grow. Thank you, Manny Bamfo
