FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - July 30, 2020 The Boldly Elon Solidarity Collective Calls Upon Elon University to Suspend All Plans of In-Person Instruction for the Fall Semester WHO: The Boldly Elon Solidarity Collective joined by Elon students, staff, faculty, and community members of Alamance County. WHAT: “We Won’t Die for Elon” - a town hall event WHEN: Monday, August 3rd, from 6-8 PM WHERE: Register for the webinar here https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_d34Bj7I1Qs6LRUf4G7RO4Q?fbclid =IwAR05Co9ebUdTMVUseYCkTnLTs-0E2tZTavOcZLK6b3cqxkFIiEPpucHHvVQ On August 19, 2020, Elon University plans to resume in-person classes, despite a steady incline of COVID-19 cases in North Carolina. As of yesterday, Wednesday, July 29th, North Carolina reported a new high of COVID-19 hospitalizations, for the second-straight day, with 45 additional deaths. Despite these reports, Elon University has maintained, with support from their Task Force, that after careful review of the situation, they are affirmed in their decision “not only that we could resume in-person instruction on campus this fall, but that we should do so,” as per an email sent to students earlier in July. We recognize that Elon University has implemented their “Ready & Resilient” plans that they believe will ensure the safety of all Elon students, employees, and Alamance County residents. However, it has become clear that Elon University has no genuine infrastructure that will provide adequate protection for all people this fall. Thus, we believe one fact to be glaringly obvious: it is NOT safe for in-person classes to resume this fall. We are demanding that Elon University value the lives of its students, faculty, staff, and surrounding Alamance County community members over their own financial interests by implementing online classes for the Fall semester. We condemn their perverse abuse of power and demand transparency from Elon’s administration in their decision making moving forward. The Boldly Elon Solidarity Collective demands comprehensive answers from Elon University and to reaffirm that WE WON’T DIE FOR ELON. “Elon administration has shown that it has prioritized profit over the well being of their students, faculty, and community members. As a student, I have felt saddened, frustrated, and manipulated by Elon.” -Trinity Dixon, Class of 2022, Boldly Elon Solidarity Collective member “By heartlessly firing adjunct faculty and insisting on face-to-face classes during a pandemic, Elon's actions suggest they are more interested in their bottom line than in the health, welfare, and happiness of the "Elon Family." Elon claims the decision to return to campus is based on student wishes, but are they really listening to students wishes and concerns? Based on the administration's silence regarding my employment, I would say no. Elon is not listening!” -Professor Robin Gary, former adjunct professor of Sociology and Poverty and Social Justice “I feel like the voices and concerns of Alamance County residents have not been considered in Elon’s reopening plans.” -Courtney T.
