BOARD OF EDUCATION OF ANNE ARUNDEL COUNTY 2644 Riva Road • Annapolis, MD 21401 410-222-5311 • 410-222-5500 (TDD) • 410-222-5629 (FAX) RESOLUTION SUPPORTING SOCIAL JUSTICE BY STATING THAT BLACK LIVES MATTER August 26, 2020 The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County today unanimously adopted the following resolution: The Board of Education of Anne Arundel County believes that the march to true equality begins when a community insists on providing its children with an honest accounting of the past and imparting to them values of kindness, acceptance, and inclusion. As such, the Board unequivocally supports efforts being led by Superintendent George Arlotto and his staff to enhance opportunities for all of Anne Arundel County Public Schools’ students to more honestly understand and learn about the past, the present, and the role they can play moving forward to eradicate hate and bias from our beloved community. Likewise, the Board fully supports those superintendents and school boards in Maryland, and educational leaders and organizations across this nation, who are working to serve as an example to children by upholding these values and being a loud and unwavering voice for truth and justice. Hate has no place in our schools, our communities, or our world. The Board joins with Dr. Arlotto, Dr. Kane, Dr. Martirano, and others in the commitment to increasing awareness and unraveling the inequities that have been brought about by years of conscious and subconscious actions. We stand united and say emphatically that BLACK LIVES MATTER. Michelle L. Corkadel President Melissa Ellis Vice President Candace C.W. Antwine Terry R. Gilleland, Jr. Eric Grannon Julie K.
