An important first step in approaching reductions of greenhouse gas emissions is accurately measuring them. by ?ptant and bybusiness, using agreed-upon and reliable meth- odologies.: I Because no single meth: od has been developed and accepted across in- dustries and companies. accurate comparisons are difficult. Our activities are directed toward real and measurable reductions in energy use. which we believe is a moreieffectivle approach than emis- sion-trading schemes that are unlikely to make a worldwide difference. . Energy ef?ciency has at- ready improved 35 percent in our re?neries and chemical piants since the 19705. We expect to see an additional 15?percent' improvement. Where appropriate. a ju- dicious adoption of fuel switch- ing will increase the use of energy with lower carbon-emit- ting characteristics. 7 Good ideas are being shared worldwide to ensure consistent approaches and to drive performance improvements. - To maintain emphasis on this multifaceted effort. we will steward results annually and pub- liclyreport them. i And wears also supporting promising FIUW approaches. l-Il? clude advanbes that can be adopted for improv- ing the energy ef?ciency or our own operations. as well as technology partnerships with other companies and universities for wider social ap- plication. - The risk of climate change and its potential impacts on society and the ecosystem are widely recognized. Doing nothing is neither pru- dent nor responsible. but the same may be said of rash action. Energy and the economic growth it supports are too important to be treated cava- iierly. - The goal of the many activities we areun- dertaking is to produce practical future reduc- tions in greenhouse gases while we improve our understanding of the science of this complex issue.
