We support diversity and inclusion as stated in the mission of our PTA: The Monarch Annapolis PTA strives to create a positive community for students, parents, and teachers. Our mission is to connect the home, school, and community together while enriching each child’s learning experience. We do this by supporting and embracing our school for its goal to highlight arts, diversity, and inclusion. We accomplish these goals by promoting parental and family participation and involvement, providing funding and volunteer support for academic and enrichment activities, creating a strong school community through educational programs and family involvement events, and supporting our teachers and staff at Monarch Academy Annapolis. Under ARTICLE VIII, Section 6 of the PTA bylaws the MAA PTA board had to remove the individual that held the position of Diversity and Inclusion. The Anne Arundel County Council of PTAs and the State of Maryland PTA Board were alerted to certain actions that violated National, State, and local PTA bylaws and board governance and advised the MAA PTA board accordingly. Both PTA bodies were represented at this closed meeting, facilitated by members of the Anne Arundel County Council of PTAs and State of Maryland PTA boards, to ensure that the MAA PTA board has followed all procedures and worked in accordance with the bylaws. This was a very hard decision for the board, one that was not taken lightly, and we are very aware of the sensitivity of the issue. We wanted the community to be fully aware of the action taken while preserving confidentiality as per PTA board guidelines. In addition, a few weeks ago, the PTA President resigned from the MAA PTA Board of Directors. In accordance with the bylaws, Elizabeth Noble will serve out the rest of the PTA President’s term. Elizabeth is fully invested in the students and the school, has the full support of the board, and we are excited for this upcoming year. In the coming weeks, there will be a full listing of positions available on the PTA as well as committees for parents to sign up for and join. If there is anyone interested in the Diversity and Inclusion position, Membership position, or Vice President position, please email the Monarch PTA at MonarchannapolisPTA@gmail.com. The position is key to diversity, inclusion and outreach efforts. The person in this role should have a strong interest in ensuring that diversity and inclusion strategies are throughout school and are reflective of the community. The Diversity and Inclusion position person should be a leader in spearheading and supporting diversity efforts throughout the school. In addition, this person should work closely with the president and membership on recruitment, minority leader identification, and membership growth (specifically to address representation gaps), as well as engagement and outreach to teachers, administrators, and youth. The Diversity position will oversee a committee for Diversity and Inclusion addressing the communities that populate our PTA area. For example, the committee might include specific members who focus on male engagement, military families, multicultural issues affecting African Americans, Asian/Pacific Islanders, Hispanic/Latino families, American Indian/Alaska Natives, and other ethnic groups, LGBTQ children and families, children with special needs and their families, immigrant, refugee, and homeless families, and so on. Membership - The PTA membership position works with the membership committee to plan the annual membership campaign. The membership position is responsible for creating and implementing a membership plan, promoting membership throughout the year, providing membership reports at PTA board and association meetings, collecting dues, and distributing membership cards. Vice President – This position will act as aide(s) to the president, perform, in their designated order, the duties of the president in the absence or inability of that officer to serve, and perform such other duties as may be prescribed in bylaws or assigned by this local PTA/PTSA or by the board of directors.
