2 About the Form The family learning-model selection form was launched on Wednesday, August 19, and administered online in 10 languages. Each student had an individual link to respond to indicate their preferred learning model for fall 2020 -- remote only or hybrid. Each link could be used once, and families could request the link to be reopened if needed. Form results are available disaggregated by: ○ Race / Ethnicity ○ Neighborhood ○ Grade Level ○ Disability Status ○ English Learner Status ○ Economic Status ○ Housing Status ○ Parent Language Preference 3 Wednesday, 8/19: Form sent via email in the preferred home language Form Outreach Thursday, 8/20 - Friday, 8/28: ● ● ● ● Families who had not yet responded received a mix of emails, robocalls, and text messages to remind them to submit their selection in their preferred language Families could also call the Transportation hotline to submit responses over the phone or email reopening@bostonpublicschools.org for assistance Central office staff began calling families without email addresses on file on 8/24. School staff began calling families who had not yet responded on 8/25. While August 28 was the initial deadline, the form remains open through September 4 to allow additional families to express their fall learning preference. Families who do not respond will be put into a hybrid learning model and can always opt for remote learning later. Response Rates 5 Response Rates Number of Students Response Rate Number of Responses 53,892 71% 38,247 As of Friday, August 28, over 60% of BPS students and families had chosen a learning model for the fall. However, response rates vary by student groups, as displayed on the following slides. BPS staff continue to do targeted outreach to increase response rates and hear from 100% of families by Friday, September 4. While the overall response is almost evenly split, differences in preference are seen across different groups: race/ethnicity, economic status, neighborhood, and parent language preference. If the current response distribution by group stays constant and 100% of students respond, the largest projected fluctuation would shift overall responses to 49% hybrid, 51% remote. Over the two weeks that the form has been open, projected preferences have moved from 45% hybrid, 55% remote to the current projection of 50% hybrid, 50% remote. Data updated as of 9/3/20 Change in Responses Over Time: Weighted by Race Overall, responses have been very consistently 50% Hybrid, 50% Remote. Given that response rates are not even across demographic groups, this analysis applies the responses by race at each point in time to the entire district population. It predicts what overall responses would be if we had a 100% response rate. This analysis is based on the assumption that the families who have not yet responded would respond in similar ways to those who have responded.
