CDC has a document in final clearance, waiting patiently to see this. Please contact the COT Service Desk ServiceCorrespondence@ky.gov for any assistance. Hi Andrea, Did you get an answer to your question? I found another article—in addition to the ones that are cited in the National Academies report I sent last week—that might help. Take care, Matthew Groenewold, PhD, MSPH LCDR, US Public Health Service Epidemiologist Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Division of Field Studies and Engineering Health Informatics Branch 1090 Tusculum Ave MS R-17, Cincinnati, OH 45226 Phone: (513) 458-7126 Fax: (513) 841-4489 From: Groenewold, Matthew (CDC/NIOSH/DFSE/HIB) Sent: Thursday, March 26, 2020 9:38 AM To: Flinchum, Andrea (CHFS PH) Subject: Question for NPPTL Hi Andrea, So, CDC wants us to direct all inquiries to go through the CDC INFO channel. The most efficient way to pose a specific question to NPPTL will be to either call 1-800-CDC-INFO (1-800-232-4636) or go to www.cdc.gov/info and submit a webform question. Either way, tell them what your question is and let them know your question is specifically directed to NIOSH/NPPTL. They will refer it to the on call SME for your topic and someone should get back to you. I don’t know how promptly they are responding to folks. Probably the best bet for getting the fastest, most accurate answer to your question right now will be the ACOEM webinar tomorrow. They are scheduled to have someone from NIOSH/NPPTL as a speaker, and you should be able to ask questions at some point during the session. I did find a document about the use of reusable elastomeric half-face cartridge respirators for routine as well as surge use in health care (attached). On pp. 158-1161, it talks about research into decontamination/sterilization methods, but it makes no mention of ClO2. It does mention ethylene oxide, vaporized hydrogen peroxide, and ultraviolet radiation for the elastomeric respirators. There is also section starting on p. 159 specifically about the cleaning and disinfection of filtering facepiece respirators, which are more commonly used in healthcare settings and probably what you were mostly asking about. For those respirators, it talks about three methods, microwave-generated steam, moist heat incubation, and ultraviolet germicidal irradiation, all of which looked at least somewhat promising. It also talks a bit about the use of ozone as a disinfectant for medical equipment, mostly as an environmentally preferable alternative to ethylene oxide, but it does not cite any studies specifically about its use on respirators. I would also not that there seems to be a lot of dubious information about ClO2 floating around the internet in the context of COVID-19. I hope this helps, Matthew Groenewold, PhD, MSPH LCDR, US Public Health Service Epidemiologist Centers for Disease Control and Prevention National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Division of Field Studies and Engineering Health Informatics Branch 1090 Tusculum Ave MS R-17, Cincinnati, OH 45226 Phone: (513) 458-7126 Fax: (513) 841-4489
