The official PUI case definition may not have changed, but the CDC travel website (https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/notices/watch/coronavirus-japan) clearly states: For patients with these symptoms who were in Japan and had onset of illness within 2 weeks of leaving, consider novel coronavirus infection and notify infection control personnel and your local health department immediately. Japan (and Korea) travelers comprise a major portion of travelers to Hawaii. Fielding a lot of questions and concerns not only from healthcare providers but partners in government and other agencies. If we’re to consider Japan (and Hong Kong) travelers who have the clinical symptoms outlined in the PUI definition as possibly have SARS-CoV-2 infection (and frankly given our experience with the recent Japan traveler, I do tend to agree we need to lower the bar, however…), then how do we handle those who are arriving and asymptomatic? If we don’t do anything about those, then we’re not being consistent with how China travelers are being handled. (A lot of questions regarding will visitors be or not be screened for travel to Japan/HK as they are for travel to China, and why or why not— basically getting slammed on both sides.) If we treat Japan/HK the same as China travelers (medium risk—home about:blank 5/26/2020 Print Page 2 of 7 monitor), Hawaii’s economy will immediately collapse. Would really appreciate some clear guidance that is consistent. Thanks. Sarah Y. Call ahead before going to a doctor’s office or emergency room. Tell them about your recent travel to Hong Kong, an area with community spread of coronavirus, and your symptoms. about:blank 5/26/2020
